Eric Swalwell Doubles Down on Attacking Mayor Pete for Police Shooting Response: Where Does the Buck Stop?
By Connor MannionJun 29th, 2019, 3:40 pm
Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) continued to hit Mayor Pete Buttigieg for his response to a South Bend police officer shooting and killing Eric Logan, asking where does the buck stop?
Hes the mayor of a town where a policy was not followed. Someone is dead. So where does the buck stop? He fired the last chief, and so Im wondering why wouldnt he fire this chief, Swalwell said.
Swalwell appeared on CNN Newsroom with Ana Cabrera Saturday where he continued to criticize Buttigieg for the shooting in South Bend, Indiana where Buttigieg is mayor.
Both men are running for president and briefly faced off during the Thursday debate when Swalwell questioned why Buttigieg didnt fire the police chief after an officer shot and killed Logan.
Ive said I would not give federal funds to any police department unless they had a body camera and unless their police departments look like the communities they patrol, he continued. If you talk to African-American communities today, theres a lot of distrust of the police. We have to be mindful of that and work to build trust with those communities.

(4,341 posts)At the debate Buttigieg blamed himself for what happened, and he did say the buck stops with him. He also pointed out that it is under investigation, he wants to find out why the officer's camera was off, and that there will be accountability from the actions, but he needs to learn the details.
I like Swalwell but, on this one I do feel he is stretching it, I am not sure that Swalwell is going to gain anything from it. He should wait and see how Buttigieg resolves or not the issue then criticize or not accordingly.

(115,856 posts)of getting the nomination, maybe he should stop taking shots at the candidates who do. It just looks spiteful and is likely to hurt his standing rather than help it. IMO he should read the handwriting on the wall (which says, "Dude, not this time, sorry" ) and keep doing his very useful work with the House Intelligence Committee while trying not to actually hurt other Democrats.
By the way, IIRC, Mayor Pete very specifically did take responsibility for the situation in South Bend.

(102,361 posts)a tragedy that Buttigieg has already "owned".
Just like his offensive ageist badgering of Biden in the desperate hope of getting attention. Not just once but repeatedly through the debate. I have liked Swalwell for his work on House Judiciary, but I find his feeble attempts to break out of the pack at the expense of bigger issues embarrassing at best and self-defeating ultimately.
Someone asked what should be the "next t-shirt (tongue full in cheek) that we see next and I believe it should be:
Swalwell with his desperate whimper to Biden to "Pass the Torch!"
Only it will say, "Please pass the Torch" countless times with a tiny, ever insistent Swalwell figure looking up from the bottom screaming through a megaphone. ---Sorry, but he really annoyed me

(146,331 posts)I can't see any benefit coming from his poo-flinging at one of the would-be nominees.
In today's ugly environment, the Mayor of any sizable city is going to have problems with racist cops doing bad things to people of color. It's a commonplace thing, unfortunately. City police departments generally pay little attention to Mayors, and Mayors generally have no real authority over police departments.
Swalwell is not helping himself by doing this, so why is he bothering?

Dem candidates cannot be attacking each other like this. I know Swalwell realizes he doesn't have a shot in hell at the nomination, and is desperate for attention. But this is not the way to go.
I always liked him when he was interviewed on MSNBC, but I'm losing all respect for him with these actions.
The common enemy here is tRump. Act like it.

(10,839 posts)What do lower tier candidates think they'll gain by this sort of attack?
Respect? Higher poll numbers?
Regardless of where you stand in your support of Buttigieg, this junk yard dog attack is not attractive. It's ugly, doesn't help the situation and smells of desperation.
Stop it!

(12,165 posts)before Swalwell even knows what hit him. While Buttigieg is listening to the community, Swalwell wants to stir up chaos. Creating chaos... hmmm.... sounds familiar. I might have read something about it in the Mueller report.
