Speaking with Stephen Colbert on Fridays Late Show, 2020 Democratic hopeful Sen. Cory Booker explained why he says he loves Donald Trump.
Colbert opened up the conversation by asking Booker about his announcement video where you said very specifically that you dont have hate in your heart. Colbert added: You even said you love Donald Trump.
Well, my mom taught Sunday school, and she taught me love your neighbor, no exception and never let someone pull you so low you hate them. So Im not going to let Donald Trump contort my soul, Booker explained, before saying we need a revival of civic grace.
Then after talking about common ground and our nations founding ideals, he clarified that saying he loves his neighbor even Trump doesnt change his political resolve.
I may love this people, but I dont want Donald Trump to be my president, Booker stressed. Im going to work very hard to make sure hes out of the office in the name of love.

The least promising way to defeat Trump is to get in the mud with him.
Americans are looking for leadership they can respect after a very bad experience with a man unhinged to principles.

(17,600 posts)I find Booker's response on this question very refreshing.
Not sure if he'll make the cut for me in other ways, but he nails this one.

(10,252 posts)Hatred is poison. The boddhisattva path is to work for the liberation of all sentient beings. Every single one. No one, not even Trump, gets left behind. And if we can't do that, we can hold the aspiration to do that.
My mind is open to the possibility that impeaching and removing Trump from office, convicting him of crimes, and putting him in prison is a way of liberating him from his belief that he is the center of the universe. That his ego is a real, solid, self-existent thing, and that there's really solid ground to stand on. Not probable, but possible.
I have this slogan taped on my computer keyboard:
"May the dark delusions of all sentient beings be dispelled.
May all beings enjoy profound, brilliant glory."

(17,600 posts)Someone can be completely right in their position, but that position may be one that won't win the election.
To have the power to effect the change we seek, first requires winning the election. Not to be dishonest about positions, but emphasize those aspects that win, not the ones that don't. And if the candidate can't speak about a position in a way that avoids turning off voters - as wrong as that turnoff might be ("ooh, socialism, evil!!1!" ) then they need to not talk about it. Better yet, we need a candidate that manages to have progressive positions but speak about them in ways that appeal to the voters we need to win the general election.
I disagree with your analysis about this particular area - I think people will find Booker's approach refreshing, as I do. But I could be wrong.
