Politico: Kamala Harris breaks out

Politico

MIAMI — For the first half of Thursday’s presidential debate, Joe Biden looked as if he would somehow be able to stand at center stage yet not be the center of the bullseye of other candidates’ attacks.

California Sen. Kamala Harris changed that, taking Biden to task for his opposition to busing and his working relationships decades ago as a U.S. senator.

The testy exchange, during which both raised their voices, highlighted a racial as well as a generational divide between the two candidates and solidified Harris as the buzziest candidate onstage. Earlier, she was the voice of reason when she quieted squabbling colleagues.

“Guys, you know what? America does not want to witness a food fight,” Harris said. “They wanna know how we’re gonna put food on their table.”
If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

True ...

It's a fair shot.

That being said, the opposition to court-ordered busing in the 1970s - based on personal experience, in one school, in one school district, in one state (Sen. Harris' state, as a matter of fact), so it is at least as valid as Sen. Harris' anecdote - was NOT about opposition to bringing AA kids from urban neighborhoods - whose parents had volunteered them for the experience - to suburban majority white schools.

It was about federal courts requiring the parents of kids in those suburban schools to accept having their kids bussed to urban schools, rather than federal courts requiring the urban schools to be improved and built UP to the standards of the suburban schools.

Racism is America's original sin, but requiring children to bear the burden of history and forcing them out of their neighborhood schools and onto busses to spend significant amounts of time on the road before getting to class is the sort of decision making that leads rational thinkers to come to the conclusion that "the law is an ass."

It was a fair shot. But it was also a cheap shot.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden
