First-time voters for Bernie Sanders don't care about his age, say he speaks to what matters to them

First-time voters for Bernie Sanders don't care about his age, say he speaks to what matters to them and would've voted for him in 2016

John Haltiwanger 6m

IOWA CITY, IA — Young supporters of Sen. Bernie Sanders say they're not concerned about his age as the 77-year-old from Vermont makes another run for president.

At Sanders' rally in Iowa City, Iowa, on Friday night, students from the University of Iowa could be overheard talking about how the senator has "always" had the same values.

One such student, Sam Johnston of Forsyth, Illinois, told INSIDER he supports Sanders because he's "fair," "reliable," and he trusts the senator to "follow through" on his campaign promises.

Johnston, 18, who will be a first-time voter in 2020, said "age range doesn't matter" when it comes to Sanders because he "just knows our values and shares them."

Anthony Schulte, who came to the rally with Johnston and will also be a first-time voter, nodded in agreement as his friend spoke.

Schulte, 19, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, told INSIDER he has "no concerns" about Sanders' age.

"Nothing is more important to me than climate change," Schulte said as he explained why he supports Sanders. He added that the senator is "not in bed" with Wall Street and big corporations, which also matters to him a great deal.

...and counted as votes that didn’t exist yet. In fact, it was so bad that Wasserman-Schultz herself asked the networks to stop doing it.

https://www.huffingtonpost.com/seth-abramson/the-national-media-has-be_b_9364170.html

“The way the media is reporting this is incorrect,” Wasserman Schultz told Rachel Maddow of MSNBC on February 20th. “There are not pledged delegates — or ‘super-delegates’ — earned at any of these caucus contests.”

She went on to note that super-delegates are “free to decide [who to vote for] anytime up until July,” and can change their mind at any time — one reason they can’t be reported as being conclusively attached to any particular candidate. “So combining them [the voted-on or ‘earned’ delegates and the super-delegates] at each phase of this contest is not an accurate picture of how this works,” she said.

It’s not divisive. It’s just the truth.

4. In other words, the young people who prefer Sanders don't care about his age. Duh.

If they did care, he probably wouldn't be their first choice.

10. I didn't think he could still inspire me - but listening to his rallies I'm still a huge fan.

I can't commit 100% as yet because I still need to see how the first few primaries go . . . but Sanders is my first choice, Pete Buttigieg is my 2nd (though I know he can't win I will support him to the end of his run) and Warren is my third. Those are the three I am still donating to.

After those - I'm not adverse to Inslee although I need to see more of his platform and Harris after that.

But I'm still surprised how much Sanders can continue to make me hopeful.

they aren't inspired. Not sure who can get them there. If Pete Buttigieg had a real chance, I think he'd be their pick. But I don't honestly see anyone to generate that kind of excitement in younger first or second time voters.

My hope is that he doesn't drop out - I'd love to see a Sanders/Buttigieg team. Now that would get me really excited!

support Trump. Right now they know his name and have the idea that Sanders is battling corruption and stasis in the Democratic Party, but that HE can fix it! (Now, WHERE would they get that idea?)

I'd bet a $100 bill out of my purse that last one hasn't heard of Governor Jay Inslee yet, for just one alternative (and I'm guessing none of the others have yet either). Also that he's really fishing for excuses to not vote for a boring/corrupted establishment candidate such as his parents might back.

I'd like to be a teacher who could assign my students to write a lengthy research paper about their current favorite, and these would get Senator Sanders. That'd fix that, for some anyway.
