(185 posts)Im not surprised he is a hypocrite I just wished he hadnt gift wrapped a soundbite for Trump. Trumps campaign manager is already tweeting about how last nights debates showed Democrats were for completely open borders. Didnt mention Castro by name but rather trying to brand our whole party.

(1,810 posts)Then made some extremely shady connections. Dishonest attacks like yours should not be allowed here. Your words don't match history, his views, his station at the time, or reality.
What's an even worse look is falsely attacking a democrat who is polling as low as Castro is. Kind of tells you where you are at. Beto had a bad night. I've supported candidates who have had bad nights. I didn't then go make up things in order to attack other candidates.

(2,753 posts)is a general-election disaster in waiting gift-wrapped to Trump. Beto's policy is progressive but sensible and could win 60 votes in the Senate.

(12,165 posts)Castro supplied details. I could leave the debate and summarize Castro's POV in a sentence. That's not something I could do with Beto. About the best way I could describe Beto is he supports incremental changes to the legal code, but I couldn't tell you to what end.
Castro advocates making illegal border crossings a civil offense. That's easy to understand. You may not like the policy idea, and that's fine, but it was communicated in a clear and memorable way.

(12,165 posts)I hadn't read this yet... thanks for the link. I would vote for his plan. He needs to work on his delivery to make his proposals more memorable with fewer words, though. What I took from last night as a relative Beto-neophyte is that he likes to tell stories and tries to connect with people by showing empathy.
On the stump, storytelling and narratives can be used in abundance since there isn't a clock running. Storytelling does make things memorable. The debate stage is different. You can get across one anecdote, maybe two, but that's only an amuse-bouche. The entree -- the proposal -- is what people need to hear in such a way that it's memorable and separates Beto from the pack. Castro was excellent at this (who knew?) and I think that's why he's getting so much attention today. Bill Clinton excelled at the anecdote followed by impactful message style of storytelling.
Beto will learn quickly, no doubt. But it is a different way of communicating than he uses out in the field. I didn't see his debate performances in Texas, so maybe I'm off base.

Apparently, they think they are distracting from Betos performance fail. All they are doing is drawing more attention to it. Kind of sad.

(6,022 posts)I thought he was wrong to take the stance he did, but I did like the emphasis by a few panelists on working to fix things in Central America, so people don't have such horrific conditions to escape from in the first place.
I found it surprising that none of the candidates even bothered to address immigration from Asia, Africa and the Middle East. People from all over the world want in too, and there are a lot of people who have overstayed on their visas and some have been deported as well.
There was also no mention of the issue of the indentured servitude inherent in the H1B process, and how many of those subjected to it have elected to return to their home countries. We're losing very good talent.
