in fact, did any of them do passably (i'm sure castro did.)
my real opinion : they tried. and that is good.

(205,696 posts)And it's likely that he's fluent since he is in Texas. I'm in the Northeast, so we're more likely to hear French. I had French in school starting in the seventh grade, though Spanish was offered in high school.
The strange thing was that Cory Booker launched into Spanish later. Maybe he was shocked that Beto stole his idea? And of course Julian Castro spoke Spanish - he's obviously bilingual. But the media, and not just the comedy shows, keep showing Cory Booker's shocked face.

(185 posts)Castro is Hispanic by heritage but he himself does not claim to be fluent in Spanish. He did speak a few sentences at the debate.
Beto is fluent with a bit of an accent. Beto has done entire interviews on Univision completely in Spanish. He is very comfortable speaking Spanish.
Booker also is fluent.
