Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumTo whom do you give the Session 1 hook?
All of this is my opinion and worth what you paid for it.
To be sure, almost any of this crowd could do the job. The issue now is WINNING.
Group One - No Chance to Win
John Delaney
Bill DeBlasio
Jay Inslee
Tim Ryan
Tulsi Gabbard
Group Two - Carry On but chances are between slim and none
Beto O'Rourke
Amy Klobuchar (who was my very first pick to support)
Julian Castro
Tonight's Winners
Corey Booker - Runner Up
Elizabeth Warren - The clear winner by a wide margin
And for the record, this is my second Primaries post, the first being something inane when the forum first opened.

(23,333 posts)The only advantage to DiBlasio is the ass whooping hed give MF45 in a one on one debate. I thought Warren and Vastronwere very impressive.

Was surprised how Castro went after Beto..

(115,782 posts)I'd say Booker is tied for second with Castro. Klobuchar still has a chance, maybe for VP if not the head of the ticket. My fantasy is that she gets either that or a cabinet appointment (AG?) so our governor appoints AL Franken to her empty Senate seat. O'Rourke was a little weaker than I expected; he seemed kind of vague.

(2,120 posts)Booker and Castro did well, Gabbard did not. Warren was expected to do very well and she really did. Give her the win.

(5,275 posts)I would move Gabbard and Inslee up to group two, Booker down to group 2. Warren scored well not sure she was a clear winner..
I would put Delaney in the no chance in Hell category.

(68,620 posts)I live in Ohio. But the same hold true in the blue wall states (PA, WI and MI). We must win three states to stop Trump...those mentioned previously. I can tell you MFA does not play at all here. They are already running commercials about taking away health care...a Warren nomination would be a disaster as we would lose badly. We would also lose any chance at the Senate (moderate coattails) and I am not sure our House majority would survive.

(8,926 posts)I think she comes across strong and thoughtful every time I see her. Tonight was no exception. If she was showing any kind of support she'd be my favorite.

(67,816 posts)I still like her and for most of the same reasons.
I ranked her as I did based on her ability to win the nomination and go on to beat Trump. That said, I still feel very good about her.

(8,926 posts)I've hoped she can overcome that rap and move past it in the primaries. I think she could be a good general election candidate in the battleground states.

(90,751 posts)Don't you just hate it when Tweety, Toady, Donny D, and Brian Williams all get going? Brian boasting about how all week he had bets going that the candidates would all pile on Joe Biden, and he was amazed that they didn't? Gimme a break!
Oh, and the aforementioned (as Brian would say) all agreed that Trump was He Who Shall Not Be Named and hardly got mentioned at all. Um, what? They are all running against Trump; he was mentioned by name several times; and his abominable policies were referred to many times.
These people are 3 parts infuriating and 1 part embarrassing.

(37,648 posts)As much as I like a couple of them, none of the candidates on the stage will win a general election against Trump, and only Warren has a slim chance of winning the nomination.
Everyone but Warren and Klobuchar needs to give up the ghost.
I include Klobuchar not because of her numbers, but clearly she is above the pack and is the quality female candidate I have been waiting for for decades. Even an independent relative, who watched just a part of the debate with me, wanted to know who she was, and was impressed by her. He thought the others were clowns and have no chance of winning a Presidential election...including Warren, of whom he said, "Oh,,,,that's Pocahontas, right?" (don't shoot the messenger...I swear that's what he said)
Ones he singled out..."Who's the bald guy?" I had to say that I didn't know; it wasn't Booker. My relative said, "I've never seen any candidate with so little presence before. Why is on the stage?" He thought Booker was weird. Klobuchar seemed Presidential and was cute. Warren is irritating. DeBlasio "Oh, that's the NY mayor. Yeah, they don't like him in NY. Why is he running?"
He knew who Beto was and had neither a good nor bad impression of him. I was unimpressed...his greenness was apparent. He's not ready for prime time. But as a VP? Maybe.

(37,648 posts)He really is an Independent. He leans Republican, but he HATES Trump. He is NOT a Republican. He really does agree with some liberal policies, and with some conservative ones. He did NOT vote in 2016. Why? He didn't want to vote for Trump, and he didn't like Hillary. In retrospect, he regrets not voting. He had no idea Trump would be as bad as he turned out to be.
He wants to vote Democratic, but he likely won't make it to the polls if the Democratic candidate is "weird," in his eyes. If the Democrats select someone who is not too far left, is more of a normal person, who has some leadership abilities and is reasonably likable....he'll show up to vote.
