Kristoff: "Why I was wrong about Elizabeth Warren"

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/06/26/opinion/elizabeth-warren.html?action=click&module=Opinion&pgtype=Homepage

Warren has improved tremendously as a politician. Early on, she sometimes came across as a stern Harvard professor eager to grill you about an obscure tort case. She’s now much better on the hustings. Forget the tort case and Harvard Law; she’s an Oklahoma gal who wants to have a beer with you.

Finally, I was manifestly wrong on Warren’s policies. She has been a geyser of smart proposals, including one I particularly like for universal child care. This would resemble the outstanding child care program operated by the U.S. military and would benefit both working moms and at-risk kids.

Warren also has a range of other proposals, pertaining to everything from election reform to housing, antitrust to corporate governance. Then she offers a wealth tax to help pay for social programs.

One of America’s biggest problems is the collapse of the working class and the lower middle class, with suicide at a 30-year high and drug and alcohol abuse causing life expectancy to fall. Warren confronts that crisis head-on both with her personal story and with sharp policies to boost opportunity. Her 2017 memoir, “This Fight Is Our Fight,” is that rarity of campaign books: a decent read.

at Harvard doesn't make her somebody's stereotype. I think they didn't like her intelligence and made up that meme to put her down.

I like that she is smart. I like that she has a plan for lots of things. We NEED plans to get us out of this awful hole Trump has dug for us.

If she gets the nomination I hope the Obamas go full bore campaigning for her. It will make us all happy...

I think she's a great candidate and becoming better all the time.

In spite of that, she's not my first choice and here's why. I am still deeply hurt and disgusted over the way the MAGAts treated Hillary in 2016. I don't ever want to see that awful, misogynist behavior again towards any woman including any of our current female candidates. There seems to be no effort to curb the Repukes' behavior this time out, so we should expect to see it all again. I don't know how bad they will get this time, but we'll find out.

Chump can and must be beaten in 2020. If we have every Democrat and most of the indies working together, we can do it! We need to keep our eyes on the prize and keep working towards that goal. I believe Joe Biden is our best chance to unite the independents and bring them into our big tent. Nevertheless Liz Warren's leadership is formidable and necessary, and she's been awesome in the Senate.
