Health care, climate change, immigration: What issues will be front and center on the debate stage?

Twenty Democratic presidential hopefuls are set to square off in the first debates of the 2020 contest Wednesday and Thursday night, and all of them will be looking for a way to stand out.

Candidates in the crowded field — three major candidates didn’t even qualify for the debates and another just entered the race this week — are all hoping to make their opening argument about why he or she is best suited to take on President Trump in November 2020.

The nature of debates featuring an unwieldy number of hopefuls means many candidates — more than half are registering around 1% in national polls — will simply be looking to spend their limited time in the spotlight introducing themselves to a national audience.

But when candidates aren’t talking about themselves, debate watchers should hear a fair amount of substance about how they intend to take on some of the weightiest issues facing the country.

While the field has common ground on nearly all of the major issues, candidates will be looking for ways to stand out from their opponents.
