Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumCan we please, on these pages, stop calling a candidate a "teflon?"
This, of course, was what Reagan was.

(1,810 posts)Some posters use the word "teflon" with someone and it has an impact on your voting preference? Sounds really strange to me.

(1,810 posts)I don't think there is an explanation for such a thing. At least not one that is straight forward and honest. It defies logic.

I can't find a problem with calling a candidate "teflon." I don't think dead ass Reagan has ownership rights on the word.
When someone has bogus smear after bogus smear launched at them, and they have little to no impact, teflon seems like the appropriate word.

(43,389 posts)A presidents ability to deflect charges of corruption or scandal.
The term originally was coined by Rep. Pat Schroeder (D-CO) when she took to the House floor in 1983 and said of President Ronald Reagan: He has been perfecting the Teflon-coated presidency: He sees to it that nothing sticks to him.
Writing in USA Today two decades later, Schroeder explained she got the idea of calling President Reagan the Teflon president while fixing eggs for my kids. He had a Teflon coat like the pan.
Steve Kornacki notes Schroeders characterization was meant to be disparaging, but in coining the term Teflon president, Schroeder actually identified a significant phenomenon in politics the willingness of voters to excuse in some politicians shortcomings that they wouldnt accept in most others.

I don't find the 'teflon' moniker terribly offensive. Because our nominee is going to need that armor to withstand the garbage assault awaiting him/her (in this case Biden) in 2020.
Here's my wish: that all our candidates develop a teflon and/or kevlar surface. Because they're going to need it to survive the campaign. This is going to get wa-a-y more ugly as we approach the actual election.
So, strap it on now! And be happy you have it.

(2,850 posts)It's weird and authoritarian. If you don't think some description is apt, just explain why.
For example: I don't think Vermin Supreme merits the name "teflon vermin" because he has a bunch of scandals that don't go away, and his head boot doesn't seem particularly smooth.
If you argument seems to hold water, probably fewer people will engage in what you consider a mischaracterization.
On the other hand, I've never read a thread pleading with me to "please stop saying X" and felt inclined to make the change being requested. I'm not going to change my way of speaking about things as a personal favor to you.
