Democratic Primaries

Former Vice President Joe Biden weathered a weekend of stinging criticism from his Democratic rivals following his comment about his ability to work with segregationists to get things done in the Senate, but it appears to have had little impact on how voters here in South Carolina see him.
Bill collector Brenda Wright isnt supporting Biden for the nomination for an entirely different reason.
If youre 76, its time to go home and sit down. Im 60, and Im ready to go home and sit down, she joked.
Wright said she wants to learn more about California Sen. Kamala Harris, South Bend, Ind. Mayor Pete Buttigieg and former Texas congressman Beto ORourke. If anything, the crowded candidate field is a bit much for her.

(43,867 posts)... they'll vote for who they see has the best shot to do so (and I'm making no claim as to who that is.) This runs counter to some white 'progressives' who, at least in elections past, threatened not to play ball unless their guy was the pitcher.

(8,709 posts)as everybody else. And I think know better than any one else what happened during and after the best president ever, Obama - the backlash besides the tea party - voter suppression laws, white supremacy, hate crimes. But I remember being skeptical of Obama in 2007, too because I didn't know too much about him and maybe it's the same reason for Harris. I'm in California so I've been following her for at least 6 years now and my enthusiasm for her has been up for a while. Still early, waiting to see if she'd make a good case for the vast majority of us. It's exciting!

(37,648 posts)I think there is a disturbing reality in some of the polls, and the numbers here on DU, which is that there is a high percentage of undecideds. I think that may show a general dissatisfaction in the candidates. There may be no standout to carry the water, in voter's eyes.
We'll see how things are after a couple of debates, to see if a standout emerges and the undecideds have settled on someone with enthusiasm.

(39,374 posts)With 24 candidates, if you think theres general dissatisfaction with the choices, thats a sad commentary on the state of the party. I think the problem for many is more likely too many choices.

(37,648 posts)But I'm undecided because I don't see a standout that I would support with enthusiasm, who has a real chance of winning the GE.
Maybe the debates will allow someone to become the standout I could support w/enthusiasm. If not, I'll just vote without enthusiasm, like I assume many other undecideds will.
There is great anti-Trump enthusiasm, though.

(39,374 posts)If past is prologue things wont come into focus until after the New Year. Nothing concentrates the mind for voters and candidates alike like votes that count. I remember jumping on the Clark bandwagon in the fall of 2003 when he had the best electability numbers. Kerry was dead in the water and Dean was the front runner. Then Dean stumbled, Kerry found his stride and threw a few very well-aimed punches and Clark shrank. It was all over very quickly after that. Iowa takes a lot of crap for being first but that caucus has set the tone for the entire nominating contest more often than not.

(37,648 posts)for a GE like this one.
20-25%, maybe. But approaching 40%? That's a red flag, if it doesn't straighten out after the debates. That indicates people who are not enthused. People who are not enthused tend to stay home on election night, if it's inconvenient...bad weather, something else to do, tired from work.
As for me, I'm a reliable voter. I take it seriously. So I'll show up for the GE, with my photo ID in hand. Many aren't that way, though.

(8,709 posts)I agree the standouts will emerge after a couple of debates. But for me, I've never in my life seen so many outstanding liberals with brilliant ideas vying for the candidacy. I think the contenders will trade or steal ideas to make their own and strengthen their platforms, as they usually do. But goodness, what incredible ideas I'm seeing that are sound. And I don't think it will be the last we hear from those who fall out of the race once we take the Senate and the presidency.
As our last president inspired, "I'm fired up and raring to go!"

(37,648 posts)Plans and programs never matter in Presidential elections, since they are almost never passed (the party has to have both houses in Congresses to pass programs, altho the Prez can push a plan and ask them to do something). Well, not that they don't matter at all. But that's not what Presidential elections are mainly about.
Presidential elections are about the general direction of the country (all Democrats carry that water...the same thrust), and finding a Pied Piper, a natural leader with charisma. This election, more than any other, matters most in beating Trump. It's an anti-Trump election, a get-back-to-democracy election, righting the ship that is headed toward fascism.
There are differences in their approaches to problems, but approaches change from a dream to reality....what CAN be done. Like the fix for Social Security. So their approaches matter, but ALL Democrats have the same opinion of SS, which is the opposite of the Republican Party.

(8,709 posts)This is the beginning stage where we're considering contenders and what can and can't be done. From what I understand, as Democrats, there is no major problem with the general direction any of them would take the country and that's good news to me. Big and bold ideas have always come from our party and I want to hear all of them from this great group of contenders. And if you think this large number of competitors is because they don't understand that this is an anti-45 election, you're sadly mistaken. That is a given.
If you can jump to the election itself as an undecided at this point, without debates, without primaries explaining and furthering their ideas more power to you.

(37,648 posts)Everything is all about the general election.
The one most likely to beat Trump is Biden. I don't support Biden, but if he's the most likely to win in the GE, why would I choose another nominee to be the GE candidate? Makes no sense.
Maybe I'll sit out the primary process and see who the nominee is. The only one I really like a lot is Buttigieg, but he would be a risk as the nominee.
