Climate change expected to be main focus of first Democratic Debate

https://www.nbc-2.com/story/40699593/climate-change-expected-to-be-main-focus-of-first-democratic-debate?fbclid=IwAR3iyo6RJozogfbyqXdybSdi4l_WRw1GFtoYc2GF6uw1GIaw7IKp_iSFJ1Y

MIAMI, Fla. - All eyes are on Florida this week as 20 Democrats will battle it out in round one of the Democratic Debates.

The debate takes place in Miami on Wednesday.

Climate change is expected to take center stage. Toxic algae, rising tides and a hurricane battered state will provide a great backdrop for this issue.

It's something voters in Southwest Florida, on both sides of the isle, said needs to be talked about.

“If somebody wants to win the state of Florida, they're going to have to talk about both of them,” said Daniel Andrews, with Captains for Clean Water.

Andrews, who makes his living on the water, is talking about climate change.

“Climate change and everglades restoration are both critical issues to our area,” Andrews said.

Andrews and Chris Whitman represent Captains for Clean Water, and they want to hear the candidates talking about these issues.

“Water quality and the health of our eco-systems is the main economic driver here in Florida, and more than ever before the public is aware of those issues,” Whitman said.

None of the candidates are from Florida, so the question becomes will they be aware of all of our issues?

“These candidates are coming from across the country where they probably have their own local and environmental issues they're concerned about,” said Lee County Democratic Vice Chairman Matt Jones.

however, Jones predicts the candidates will become more familiar with South Florida needs.

“It's good to know that Florida is still the center of attention, because I believe that Florida will pay a pivotal role in the 2020 election,” Jones said.

Florida Gulf Coast University political science professor Dr. Sandra Pavelka predicts climate change will be one of the main drivers going forward to win Florida.

“It will be more difficult for the Republicans, but nonetheless it's going to be a very important issue for them to discuss because the Democrats aren't going to give up on this,” Pavelka said.

A poll released by the Florida League of Conservation Voters shows 57 percent of all Florida voters think the environment and climate issues are important.

A CNN poll showed 82 percent of Democrats find it very important.

Biden is top choice for climate-minded 2020 voters: Poll

"The results echo other national polls of Democrats, which have largely found Biden far ahead of Sanders and Warren"
