Former congressman Joe Sestak (D-Pa.) announced Sunday that he is running for president, joining 23 earlier entrants in the presidential race.
Sestak made the announcement in a video posted to his campaign website.
Im Joe Sestak, and I wore the cloth of the nation for over 31 years in peace and war, from the Vietnam and Cold War eras to Afghanistan and Iraq and the emergence of China, Sestak said in the video. Born and raised in Pennsylvania, I grew up in this global canvas of service in the United States Navy.https://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=mysubs
Sestak served two terms in the House, from 2007 to 2011. A retired Navy admiral, he also pursued two unsuccessful bids for the Senate, each time drawing the ire of national Democrats, who chafed at Sestaks go-it-alone style and quirky personality.
Sestak first drew national attention in 2010 when he waged a primary challenge against then-Sen. Arlen Specter, who had switched parties to run for reelection as a Democrat.
The Obama White House, in an effort to dissuade Sestak from running, dispatched former president Bill Clinton to offer Sestak an unpaid position on a presidential advisory board if he dropped out of the race. Sestak said no. He bested Specter in the primary and later lost to Republican Pat Toomey in the general election.

(768 posts)It is overwhelming how many people are running for the Democratic nomination for President!
However, I am trying to take a long view. Most of the people running are far better than any of the candidates the Republicans put forth last election. I could live with all of the candidates I know something about and would campaign strongly for the final nominee.
Joe Sestak used to be my Congressman and I have a lot of respect for him. He had an outstanding military career. He is an independent thinker and seems to support all of the issues that concern me (reproductive rights, education, health care, environment, gun control, etc.). He is not a mental lightweight like Trump. In fact, he also has a Ph.D. in political economy and government from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
I look at the large field of Democratic candidates as a way for them to audition for a cabinet post should they not receive the nod for the presidential nomination. Sestak would make an excellent VP, Secretary of Defense, or Secretary of State. Other candidates would make great cabinet officers in Commerce (Warren), Justice (Harris), etc. Sestak would probably help deliver Pennsylvania's Electoral College votes.
In his 2016 primary bid to run against Senator Pat Toomey, Sestak walked the Commonwealth of PA. His polling was higher than Toomey's At the last minute, the Democratic power bosses decided to run Katie McGinty to punish Sestak for besting Arlen Spector (R turned D) in the 2010 Democratic primary. Sestak barely lost the 2010 election but possibly could have beaten Toomey in 2016 if the establishment Democrats had put their support behind him, instead of McGinty.
Joe Sestak is a good man. Do not write him off at this point.

(487 posts)Mcginty was a weak candidate compared to sestak and cost us a senate seat. Where is she now? I still think that he should run again for the senate here in PA, or any other office as I really like him.
He has no chance of getting the democratic nomination.
The democratic machine did the same thing in 2018 in PA-01 by throwing their support behind a candidate prematurely.

(393 posts)Is the Senate now chopped liver? Quite a few of these candidates would have made outstanding Senate candidates and might have gone on to win. Or are they all running for VP?
