Joe Biden to rich donors: "Nothing would fundamentally change" if he's elected

https://www.salon.com/2019/06/19/joe-biden-to-rich-donors-nothing-would-fundamentally-change-if-hes-elected/

Former Vice President Joe Biden assured rich donors at a ritzy New York fundraiser that “nothing would fundamentally change” if he is elected.

Biden told donors at an event at the Carlyle Hotel in Manhattan on Tuesday evening that he would not “demonize” the rich and promised that “no one’s standard of living will change, nothing would fundamentally change,” Bloomberg News reported.

Biden’s assurance to donors in New York came shortly after his appearance at the Poor People’s Campaign Presidential Forum in Washington on Monday.

Joe Biden has taken a lot of heat for telling a room full of wealthy donors this week that their standard of living isn’t going to change when he’s elected president, but that snippet was taken out of context. He implied that he’d raise their taxes, but he wouldn’t do it to the degree that other Democrats want. But there were other statements he made that should be a concern, as Ring of Fire’s Farron Cousins explains.

The commentary does a good job of explaining the context, and I suppose the context exonerates his WORDS, but the context damns him as well. First he is in a room full of wealthy donors - strike one. Second, if the commentator is correct, to suggest he's the good choice because he won't raise taxes as much as the other candidates shows how out of touch he is. Taxes on the wealthy need to go back up for a variety of reasons but we can leave it at "because that's where the money is." Strike three, he does NOT say to the wealthy donors "I will raise your taxes." Say the words Joe, and I might not write you off.

If Joe Biden wants to campaign on American values and decency, maybe he doesn't need to demonize the wealthy but it would not hurt if their greed was condemned.

This is Neo-liberalism at its peak. This kind of stuff is exactly why we have such corrosive income disparity.

It's the same-ole same-ole. I'm not even sure it can defeat Trump.

They believe that income inequality is not caused by the system, but rather by a few rotten apples (say the Koch brothers) within the system.

I say that's bunk -- the deck is perpetually stacked against the middle and lower classes. It's called "hegemony."

.....mean "privatize" the public commons? Have for-profit health care, for-profit post offices, for-profit prisons, for-profit charter schools etc etc.

Lower corporate taxes and taxes on th 1%, build up the narional debt, then pay that debt for by cutting the social safety net---SS and Medicare and Medicaid--and on and on and on.

The elites actually get richer, even as income inequality is decreasing, because the working class is better off and spend more.

He includes a small rant about it at every rally, including at the Poor People's Forum. "Stepped-up basis" allows heirs of property to not have to pay capital gains tax on the amount the property appreciated during the decedent’s lifetime. He apparently wants to repeal it, though I don't recall if he says so specifically.
