'He Never Called Me Boy...' By Connie Schultz

'He Never Called Me Boy...'
By Connie Schultz

snip//

"He never called me 'boy.' He always called me 'son,'" Biden told donors. "Well, guess what? At least there was some civility. We got things done. We didn't agree on much of anything. We got things done. We got it finished. But today, you look at the other side and you're the enemy. Not the opposition, the enemy. We don't talk to each other anymore."

He never called me "boy." No mention of how "boy" was a common term of derision and disrespect for black men in the Jim Crow south, or how Biden's white skin determined Eastland's willingness to work with him. Instead, we're supposed to see Biden's ability to get along with a man who called black people "an inferior race" as a model for how to engage with civility in 2019.

When I first learned about Biden's comments, I thought about all the black people in my life: friends, neighbors, students and colleagues. How would they feel hearing this? What did they deserve to hear from white people like me?

I had to do what I'm always insisting other white people do during uncomfortable discussions about race: Speak up.

My message, on Twitter and on my public Facebook wall: If Joe Biden wants to boast about his relationship with a racist, he is not who we need to succeed the racist in the White House.

He's saying he, and we, have to work with people we disagree with. Even if they're racist assholes. That's I'm no way an endorsement for racism or apathy toward it. It's simply working to get things done. As a country we negotiate with detestable leaders all the time. Refusing to work with an elected official within our own government I just dumb.

Can someone begin a daily count of all the offensive and raciest things Donald (See my African American over there!) Trump versus all the slightly "misspoken" things Joe or any Democratic candidate (or all combined) that many so called Dems are quick to take offense over. Even though the campaigning begins way too early these days, the Democratic circular firing squad is already lined up.

work with Eastland. He even notes that Eastland was a person he disagreed with about almost everything, but he was somebody he could work with. How you get that is not boasting about his relationship with anyone is a mystery.

And why do we have to work with racist asshole’s?

to create circular firing squads, especially during primary season. The stakes are just too high this election.
Think before you speak! Before you try to label Biden a racist you might want to clear it with that Obama guy-he might have some insight.

Than I was before. So keep putting articles like this on DU and I'll fight even more for Joe. Not here of course because there is too much infighting. I'll work as hard as I can wherever my help is needed.
