(102,340 posts)But he doesn't have to get in the tank and wear the helmet or in Beto's case, sit down in the chair and discuss his ear hair.
Obviously, he realized (or his staff did) that he needed to create media impressions that allowed his being taken seriously and adapted. Good on him. That hardly rules out classic man-on-the-street type interactions, with which, I agree he has considerable aptitude and skill.
I like Beto. This is not an attack on him. But, not all social media is positive and that which is not is like igniting a fuse for his opponents/critics and yes, the media.

There's no movement represented between these two. This poll has a MoE of nearly 5 points and the difference from one to another is within a couple. The poll is essentially showing a steady race where Biden leads, Sanders is a distant 2nd, and there is a virtual 4-way tie for 3rd.

(146,325 posts)In the June 14-15 survey, Biden garnered support from 35 percent of registered voters who identified as Democrats or as independents who favored the party. The next closest candidate was Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), at 13 percent.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) came in third with 7 percent, followed by former Rep. Beto O'Rourke (D-Texas) at 6 percent, Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) at 5 percent and South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg at 4 percent.
That's one of the largest percentage point leads Biden has shown in a poll so far. Beto has risen a bid in the second group, but Biden's doing very well, indeed.

If anything, this just shows that O'Rourke not hitting the media part of campaign trail as hard as he is lately was a bad move for him.

(2,113 posts)Instead, it was national media reporters acting all salty for him declining to be interviewed in order to meet actual voters...they were not reporting accurately about him and were dismissive and condescending towards him to "punish" him for not going onto their shows. By him going on the shows now and being seen it countered the inaccuracies being pushed by talking heads.

(2,113 posts)He just didn't want to do it that early. Beto forms his policy positions by meeting and talking to the people most impacted. He learns about the areas they come from, what their issues and concerns are, if they have ideas and opinions. He uses all that he learns to put together his policy proposals. That's why it was important for him to be on the ground first. I like that he does that.

(185 posts)He didnt accept PAC Money during his Senate campaign and hasnt during his presidential campaign. During his Senate campaign, he donations from individuals working in the oil industry. It is silly to insist that a secretary or janitor etc... should not be able to donate to candidate of choice. Recently he has updated to not accepting even Individual Donations if they are from oil company Executives.

Your links are misleadingBeto raised more money from individual donations than any other Senate candidate, so Individual donations from workers in all industries-including oil-were very high But these were from people not companies

(36,130 posts)J Street PAC lists O'Rourke as one of the candidates it supports in the 2018 midterm elections and offers a link on its website for anyone to donate to O'Rourke directly. The PAC also hosted an event to collect individual donations to put directly toward his campaign. The Federal Election Commission calls these "conduit contributions ," which means both the individual donor and the organization that gathered the money must be listed on campaign finance forms.
He later turned down any more donations from individuals through the PAC, even though it's technically not considered PAC money. So I've answered my own question.
It's still the $557,701 received from oil & gas that stands out to me. Only Ted Cruz has received more.
So, which of his stances stand out to you from the ontheissues.org summary? I ask because his 4th place appeal across the party puzzles me. Is it mostly his youth? charisma? Just what likely issues will he open his debate with to the nation?
I'm open to any O'Rourke endorsers here who can tell me what makes him stand out to them.

(2,113 posts)truck drivers, rig workers. People list the industry they work in...like education, food service, medical, etc. Texas has a lot of oil and gas companies that employ average citizens who support and donate to Beto. It is NOT companies giving that money. If oil companies were "buying" a politician they'd give a hell of a lot more than 500k.

(36,130 posts)classifies Oil & Gas contributions. If individuals were so important, one would assume they'd have their own category, so I assume that the Oil & Gas industry donations mean something in a U.S. presidential election. https://www.opensecrets.org/industries/recips.php?ind=E01++

(28,082 posts)and Open Secrets classifies the money as coming from a particular business or industry. My contribution would get lumped into either insurance or a health care category (with my employer it could go either way, though health care would be more accurate for me). That does not mean I don't support single payer or that I'm hoping the candidate won't.

(185 posts)One reason Betos Senate run was so amazing is that he did not accept Any money from PACs/companies and raised money entirely from individual donations from actual people and he still raised more money than any other Senate candidate in history.
As mentioned by several people above, if I donate $50 as an individual to my candidate of choice, I have to list my occupation which is then classified as a donation from whatever industry Im working in. But a $50 donation from an individual is far different from multi millions from PACs/ companies. Individuals are limited to I think around $2800 but most people probably give five dollars here and $10 there to candidates they like.
If corporate money in politics is a concern for you, Beto is actually one of the few who only accepts money from individual people. Bernie and Warren are others and maybe theres someone else. But most of the candidates do take PAC money
