Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumSexism is weighing down the women running for the Democratic nomination
A full 20 percent of Democratic and independent men who responded to the survey said they agreed with the sentiment that women are less effective in politics than men. And while 74 percent of respondents claimed they were personally comfortable with a female president, only 33 percent believed their neighbors would be comfortable with a woman in the Oval Office.
That latter number, explained Mallory Newall, research director at Ipsos, was a strong tell about how gender dynamics were souring voters on certain candidates. Asking respondents how they believe their neighbors feel about an issue is a classic method to get around people being reluctant to admit to less popular views.
{snip}
The discomfort that voters have with female candidates helps explain one of the persistent undercurrents of the current election. In various hypothetical general election matchups, the male Democratic candidates have consistently done better against President Trump than their female counterparts.

(36,132 posts)to women leaders -- they are the problem. Not women's so-called effectiveness.
Their failure to see women leaders' ideas because they can't see past women having the ideas is what weighs women down.
Women not only have to fight for their ideas and actions, they have to fight against their equals who refuse to live with women's equality, and thus find any pretext for undermining women's effectiveness.

Women conductors have been in living hell trying to 'make it.'
To say nothing of the fight to just become orchestra members, which has been improved 10,000%, I will say... yet...
Here is one of the really brilliant conductors---
Mirga Grainytė-Tyla
Her PROMS debut.
But, she makes a mistake during the Mozart.. A tiny one, but the winds save her.. Can you spot it?

(37,648 posts)Just like people had a view of black people and wouldn't vote for an Af. American for President, along came Obama, and all that changed. He wasn't so much a person of mixed race as he was a charismatic politician with natural leadership qualities.
That's what may change the female thing. This charismatic leadership quality is hard to come by among men, and harder to find among women.
It's a confidence, a sense of self, an ease with oneself and others, good sense of humor, smart, quick on her feet...someone anyone would follow if you're lost in a jungle, and she says, "Follow me! I'll find the way out!"
Women haven't historically been raised to have these qualities. But that's changing, so hopefully, more women will exhibit these natural leadership qualities.

Do you live in New York? I'm just curious why Cortez would spring to mind for you.

It is what it is and it is WHY we should nominate a man. We simply cannot afford to have Trump reelected. Maybe put a female on the ticket and she can run in 2028.

(5,803 posts)Some folks sure seem to walk around like they know something when really they are just throwing around tired old excuses because they are so concerned that the womenz can only fail.
Even after Hillary, a woman who was attacked and threatened relentlessly, sailed to victory. The only way she could be beaten was by treason.
But, yeah, certainly not this year.

(2,343 posts)I dont doubt at least some would not vote for a woman. For me (and I suspect I'm not the only one), I am extra-motivated to vote for a woman out of a "gender or sex guilt." ( it's akin to white guilt.) It makes me feel good to vote for a woman and any guily I have (which Isnt great but it is assuaged by voting for a woman. For sure, I always vote for the best candidate, so sex isnt the main catagory. But, I feel good voting for a woman. I feel good voting for any non-mainstream candidate (as long as they are a Democrat)! I violated my conscience in 2006, though, when I voted for a cousin running for cicuit judge as a Republican.

(9,535 posts)and people of other races -- there just aren't enough black voters for him to win with that alone.
We cannot pander to the bigots, racists and male chauvinists who are likely not going to vote Democratic no matter what. The Neanderthals would vote for a chimpanzee if it has an R after its name on the ballot.
Women and people of color, however, excite many voters who might otherwise stay home, boosting turnout.
There have been plenty of women Governors elected even in conservative Southern states. I am just not worried that gender alone would cost more votes than it would win.
And a woman at the top of the Dem ticket might also get some moderate women's votes -- and after all, women ARE the majority of the U.S. population!
