Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumGov Steve Bullock was just ONE PERSON short of making the debates
at least there will be a spiritual guru on the stage
<When the Democratic National Committee set the lineup on Thursday for the first presidential debates, Gov. Steve Bullock of Montana didnt make the cut. He could have, had he done better in just one more poll.
Even that understates just how close he came. He might have qualified had he received the support of one more person in that single poll.
Yet Mr. Bullocks low support in the polls doesnt preclude the possibility that hell play a meaningful role in the race. His exclusion illustrates the challenge of using polls at this early stage to make sense of the race, let alone to decide whom to include in the debates on June 26 and 27.
Many candidates have gone on to emerge as serious contenders after starting with around 1 percent of the vote. These were mostly people who had low name recognition, but gained support after becoming better known in the early states or nationwide.

In 2008 Obama, Hillary and McCain had the lowest attending record in the Senate.
And, Bill Clinton entered the race in September or October. Again, a governor whose first priorities were to run the state.

He remained in Montana during the legislative session and then once it was over he moved into running for office

(19,962 posts)his choice. He only declared on May 14, which was clearly too late to get fully up to speed. I'm only commenting that he'd be better off taking it on the chin and making sure he gets up the ladder in time for the next debates. Blaming others is not a good look.

(25,183 posts)he might just have had that one person. But that was his choice.
I've been to Montana, and let's face it, the things you have to say and believe in to be a governor of that state are things that are not really the kind of things that appeal to the base of our party. It makes no difference if he's eliminated in the first round or the second round of debates. Many currently running will not make that second cut.

(94,610 posts)There were MORE candidates than could be accommodated, which meant there would have to be a ranking of BOTH polling and contributors, where he has definitely been lagging.
