(34,195 posts)What the DNC is saying:
"[The] goal is to provide a platform for candidates to have a vigorous discussion on ideas and solutions on the many issues that voters care about, including the economy, climate change, and health care. While climate change is at the top of our list, the DNC will not be holding entire debates on a single issue area because we want to make sure voters have the ability to hear from candidates on dozens of issues of importance to American voters."

(11,991 posts)First, far fewer people will tune in for a debate about the various Dems' positions on climate change, compared to one covering a wide range of issues that include climate change. In fact, people who don't already consider climate change a priority--that is, specifically, the people we most need to reach on this issue--are exactly the people who would not bother watching a debate that covered nothing else.
Plus, it's also one of the issues where I think there is not really so much diversity in our candidates' positions anyway. Basically, I think such a debate would probably amount to little more than Inslee proving he has more detailed plans than some of the others and that it will be his number one priority. Okay, fine, I'll give him that. I don't need to spend 90 minutes figuring that out.
Actually, if I were one of the other candidates, I'd simply say, "If I'm elected, I will appoint a 'climate czar' to oversee this issue, and I hope Jay Inslee will accept the position."

(772 posts)are Democrats ... at least most of them are.
DNC is the governing organization of Democrats and establishes the rules.
Any candidate who doesn't like the rules can resign from the party and run as an independent.
In a nation of laws, rules and regulations, things are done with proper protocol and not by whim.
If every candidate wanted a debate on their pet issue, we will have chaos.
Furthermore, any candidate who wants to highlight a particular issue can do so in their allotted time during the existing debates.

(506 posts)What you describe as proper protocol is in this case arbitrary authoritarian whim. If you're concerned to avoid actual chaos then you'd be in favor of public debate on climate solutions. Real chaos is on the way.
Your invitation to democrats to leave the party... ? Well, what can I say... it's our party, who are you?

They are charged with making the rules. If you don't like the rules, get new people elected on the DNC boards and committees.

That sounds an awful lot like, do what you are told. If you don't like it, beat it.
I do not think that is the way Democrats generally think. In fact it sounds like a repressive, authoritarian way to run things...

(70,215 posts)i can see both sides here.
it is the most pressing long term issue.
it is also inslee's main reason for running.
since we are all on the same side here, more or less, perhaps a debate isnt a good format to discuss it.
i mean, we arent gonna have a debate about abortion, either, but it matters hella lot to me.
inslee needs to get his own soapbox here.

(11,949 posts)Our performance in 18 is a result of DNC action. Only now are those on the left of the party realizing that a 50 state policy means more moderate democrats in Congress. They love have the majority. Hate that the majority is on the moderate side of liberal. Still liberal however.
The couple of freshman getting all the press won safe liberal seats. Those that gave us the majority are nothing like AOC. They are from right leaning districts. Speaker Pelosi knows this and is acting according.
If you are very far to the left, and I think I am, and feel Speaker Pelosi or the DNC is being too timid, there is a reason. And I get it. Most democratic voters and most Americans do not share many of my views. And liberal or moderate, if we are not in the majority we accomplish nothing.

(31,261 posts)I can promise you that if each listed his or her top two issues, climate change will not make some of their top two. So it boils down to what is most important for a candidate.
But with the DNC format, 8-10 top issues get debated on. Inslee knows his stuff in the area of climate action, he should be able to beat up the others once that segment is debated. We understand how important it is for us to solve climate change, we don't need long descriptions of how dangerous it is. A solid plan for dealing with climate change can be described in 45 seconds, hell, I am down to 90 second showers, so describing a promising climate change action plan certainly should not take as long as it takes me to shower.

because the debate wont really tell much about the candidates either. it's more about performance and soundbytes . it's about how they hold up.
but there will be very little about actual issues and details.

(146,329 posts)in the debates, I guarantee. Still, there are many other issues that are important to voters, so there will be many other issues raised in those debates. Not everyone is totally focused on climate change, which is a very complex thing, and dependent on many other issues.
We'll hear the candidates views and proposals on climate change in the debates.
