What Biden Said in Atlanta Last Night About Abortion and Healthcare
Source: Atlanta Journal
Former Vice President Joe Biden said Thursday he no longer supports a controversial ban that blocked the use of federal funds for some abortions, reversing a position that put him at odds with many Democrats.
The White House hopeful told Democratic donors at an Atlanta fundraiser that anti-abortion measures adopted in Georgia and other states are a signal that Republicans are not going to let up on adopting aggressive abortion restrictions.
I cant justify leaving millions of women without access to the care they need and the ability to (access) their constitutionally protected right, Biden said. "If I believe health care is a right, as I do, I can no longer support an amendment that makes that right dependent on someone's zip code," he said.
The Hyde Amendment is a four-decade-old law that prevents government health programs, such as Medicaid, from using federal funds for abortions except in cases of rape, incest or to save the life of the woman.
Biden said he was forced to shift his stance because womens rights and womens health are under assault like we havent seen in the last 50 years.Folks, times have changed, Biden said. I dont think these guys are going to let up.

(23,155 posts)1. I am ecstatic to see this.
Yes, Democrats of the past did support the Hyde Amendment in error, IMO, and I am so glad to see that Joe now gets that it not a women friendly, pr healthcare friendly policy and must be scrapped, ASAP. First we have to take back the Senate and have the presidency. I think Joe will be a big advantage in both of those efforts.

made by a lot of people yesterday.
Most effectively, imho, by Elizabeth Warren.

but does zero to impede the assault on those rights at any level.

(11,991 posts)9. Tying Hyde support to "anti-abortion measures adopted in Georgia and other states"
makes no sense to me. I mean, there's not much to be gained by allowing federal funds to be used to pay for an abortion that a woman can't get.
