Cheesus, why didn't someone get this older woman a seat to begin with (or, for the younger folks, why didn't you give up yours?).

(36,875 posts)It is a small venue with a random older woman sitting on the floor in the very front... why didn't someone make sure she had a seat prior to the start of the event? Strange.

(90,779 posts)Going back to a long time before I was an old lady, I rode the bus to work, and by the time I was about 12 months pregnant I really didn't have the balance I needed for all the jostling and potholes involved. I stood right next to 4 young men who had seats. Nice. You know who gave me a seat? A tiny Japanese-American lady who looked about 80 years old.

(36,875 posts)Hell, I would have given her my seat (as I am younger)!
I'm glad that Hatch didn't show up so this random older lady sitting on the floor in the front could get a seat (and whisper, then talk about her whisper later). And I'm pretty sure that Hatch had no plans to attend the event in the first place.

(27,827 posts)I see it at restaurants, where my mother and father, in their 80s, are expected to stand while we wait for a table while kids of 10 or 12 sit and their parents don't blink an eye or say a word.
I see it where people with canes or walkers stand while younger people sit.
We were always taught to give up our seats to people who needed it most, particularly older people. That's not the norm now, and it's a head scratcher, because I don't think the people I see on the bus are necessarily rude, they just haven't been taught - nor do they look up and observe - that other people need the seat more. The older I get, the harder it is for me to stand on the bus, and even though I am fit and don't look my age (or as if I need a seat, usually), I sometimes find myself fuming. I did comment on it once to a much younger woman, and she said, "well, why didn't you ASK?" Well, that's not how it works. No one wants to ask someone to give up a seat; it's embarrassing.

(1,810 posts)It was pretty clear from the beginning that this issue was going to help him. Im pretty sure the Republicans will even shelve that line of attack after seeing the reaction to it when the left tried to smear it with him. They are now just using it to their advantage.

(16,439 posts)In the other threads you had people, including women here, in a rage over the older woman saying Joe could hug her anytime. Just beside themselves with anger that she didnt follow the script.
And then there were the people who thought making hay over it might help their candidate. Entertaining stuff. I suspect this thread will follow a similar pattern.

He knows that the press is ready to pounce on anything so that they can turn it into a scandal, for ratings, so he took it upon himself to set the record straight.
