I also get $4.00 an hour babysitting a two month old for a single mom who works a minimum wage job. As a foster parent, I'd get about $540 a month for 1 child and that was supposed to also cover some of the expenses.

I'm already paying property taxes for schools, kicking in to school fundraisers, and purchasing graduation gifts. Someone made a decision to have these children, so why should I have to contribute more with higher taxes?

My only returns on these investments are to keep the children out of prison and hope that I live long enough that the children will pay for my Social Security. It seems that the fair thing to to is that the people who benefit from having the children should shoulder the costs associated with being a parent.

I suspect that I'll take some flak for this, but unlike universal healthcare this program only benefits a certain segment of society which will make it a tough sale to the general population.

I pay $8500 a year in property taxes, it keeps going up every year, I don’t want to pay any more taxes, I can’t afford it. It will be a very tough sale.

While I had a larger salary most of our careers, he had three sons who graduated college as engineers and began their working careers making as much money as I did when I was getting at 45 years old. My roommate doesn't think that his taxes should go up now that his three sons are out of school.

So I contributed to their education and my friend can feel assured that he will never be homeless and someone will be there if he or his wife need long-term care. Meanwhile, I've been homeless and I'm up the creek if I need long-term care. However, I'm almost certain that I've paid more in taxes over time. While I've created many of my own problems, I should not be held responsible for providing child care for the next generation. In this instance I do not agree with Warren's proposal.

However, the principle is that those children are not my responsibility regardless of my income. The parents should have thought about the expenses associated with having children instead of expecting taxpayers to rescue them from a situation that they made for themselves.

I don't have any qualms about paying for education, or to keep the children fed and with a roof over their heads. But there comes a point where the parents need to step up to the plate.

"there comes a point where the parents need to step up to the plate..."
What specifically leads you to believe they are not?

"those children are not my responsibility regardless of my income..."
Does that apply consistently to the collective obligation towards children in the community (e.g., non-profit hospitals, libraries, etc), or does it apply only to the one issue? If the latter, what are the precise and relevant differences which make valid support the one, but not the other?
