Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumI am proud of my Congressman Tim Ryan
I don't think he has much of a chance to win the Democratic nomination, but gosh, all of his remarks on CNN the other day were spot on. Especially his take on how Trump deals with China and the media fawning all over Trump's stupid tough-guy rhetoric.
"When you think that the president has committed crimes and I have read the Mueller report and I believe [Trump] has obstructed on multiple occasions, we have a responsibility. I dont want to. I know what this is going to do to the country. I take no joy in this at all, but I have a duty and a responsibility. And that duty and responsibility has led me to think we have to do this.
In response to a person who questioned if he was focusing on winning back the white working class and what would he do about racial inequality, Ryan said: I have made it a point because people do try to say Tim Ryan is a white Irish guy from Youngstown, I make it a point, this is not about the white working class. This is about white people, black people, brown people, gay people, straight people, men, women, North, South, urban, rural. This economy is not working for anybody, well, just the top 1 percent and much of the top 5-10 percent of the people in the country.
He added: So I think its critically important when I talk about electric vehicles and all of these other projects and growing the pie, I will have concrete plans on how to steer that investment into communities of color, into communities that have been left behind. A lot of people dont know, but Youngstown, Ohio, is 50 percent African-American.
Ryan also said China is our No. 1 threat. We have a relationship, but theyre a threat. They want to take us out economically.
He criticized Trump for not have a big strategy with China.
He has a tactic that gets him on TV because he sends a tweet out, tariffs are on, tariffs are off, and the media runs with it all the time and it changes the subject and he can look tough. Were getting our clock cleaned.
Trump made a lot of promises to the workers in Youngstown, Ryan said. I think it would be nice if hes spending $20 to $30 billion helping farmers deal with a crisis, he could spend $1 billion helping General Motors open that factory back up in Youngstown, Ohio, and we can start providing electric cars and well kick Chinas butt that way instead of what hes trying to do now.

(58,785 posts)I hope he is able to be helpful in electing Democrats by, as Mother Jones said, planning to "win back the 70-year-old teamster for whoever our nominee is.
I know he must have more issues than white male victimization and a female speaker, but he's too conservative for me, and I'm repelled by his behavior. We do need the resentful white men we lost to Trump back, of course, but out of rediscovered principles; the midterms probably show some came back on their own, though, probably the best of them. Those "70-year-old teamsters" aren't hurting a penny more than all the white women and minorities of all genders who are also missing the pensions they earned in the form of deferred pay, and Ryan's message will hopefully try to connect them with their better angels -- and sense of responsibility to all of us.
At least he couldn't do a worse job in the debates than his 2016 counterpart, Jim Webb, who also ran against the "war on white men" and just too damned much equality.
Btw, let's also remember that this year's speaker's battle was Ryan's second attempt to oust, not any of the 5 men in top party leadership, but only the one top woman, and we should assume he will try-try again. Against Pelosi or another woman. Especially, though, if she were to exercise the escape clause in the self-term-limiting he helped force on the one woman in top leadership by making trouble we just couldn't afford.
