Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumI really like Jay Inslee.
I have listened to his interviews since he has declared, and I like the things he has done in the State of Washington. He seems like a very thoughtful intelligent guy. I am conflicted because my thinking has been that the nominee needs to be a woman.
I am leery of Joe Biden. It has nothing to do with with his ideology or past actions. I won't go into it because he has not declared yet. Maybe there are some of us out there who feel the same way.

(7,596 posts)People shouldn't be dissuaded from supporting him just because of the gender and skin color he was born with. That's silly.

(1,357 posts)I also feel there absolutely needs to be a woman on the ticket. I would say Harris, but then there would be 2 west coast candidates and that generally doesn't work. I do not like Klobuchar or Gillibrand - maybe Warren? But, where are the foreign policy chops?
*sigh*
In any case, I do like his policies and rhetorical style.

(17,055 posts)Gillibrand but what do you not like about Klobuchar?
I also think that Warren needs to just stay where she is, she is a little too liberal for fly-over country and some southern states but she is perfect for us here in MA.

(1,357 posts)(And I know that's not a good reason). But my Spidey-senses tingle when she speaks. Not positive I know why yet.
Things can change. I am still open.
But I DO like Inslee!

(5,536 posts)But there is one overarching reason that never seems to come up.
This will be the fourth time that he has run for President.
To me, a candidate is a combination of tangibles (policy, resume, abilities, etc.) and intangibles (likable, inspirational, IT-factor).
As much as we say that we choose on tangibles, the truth is that the candidates with intangibles get elected.
There is no doubt that he has added to his tangible resume with 8 years as VP. However, for whatever reason, he has not won the last 3 times he ran.
If he has not risen to the top yet, it may signify a weakness as a candidate. There is a reason why our most prominent Democratic Presidents in the last 60 years have been young (Obama, Clinton, Kennedy, even Carter). They made an immediate impression and captured the public's attention when first introduced.
Related but for different reasons, I want my candidates to have 10 good years in them for a campaign and two terms. He will be closing in on 88 at that point. The odds are not good that he will be healthy and sharp at that age.
