Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumWill they call Beto another 'boss from hell'?
A presidential candidate trying to project a friendly and kind demeanor, we learn, is the boss from hell. The candidate berates staff and has a bad temper, a penchant for humiliating staff in front of others and questionable management. Are these things critical to determining fitness to be president?
The mainstream media thought so a few months back as it pummeled Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., for days and weeks, repeating the same stories told by anonymous sources. I, however, was referring to Beto ORourke. Lets take a look at the double standard on steroids. When challenged for going after Klobuchar for behavior for which a male boss would escape criticism, the press said its coverage had nothing to do with gender. Fine. Now is the chance to prove that the endless parade of boss from hell stories had nothing to do with gender. The Daily Beast reports on the documentary about Beto ORourkes 2016 Senate race:
In the doc, Beto comes off as charismatic yet controlling its most revealing moments being ones where he is seen dressing down his clearly overworked staff for their perceived lack of preparedness. The person on the receiving end of most of the scoldings is Cynthia Cano, his road manager. At several tense points in the film, Cano is criticized by Beto in front of her campaign colleagues for not leaving enough time in his schedule for media interviews, having him be late to campaign events, and not adequately prepping him for those events ...
(snip)
I raise this not because I think mean bosses should be exempt from criticism or because managing staff isnt part of being a chief executive (although I found the coverage of Klobuchar to be overwrought) but because the media now must walk the walk and treat ORourke in a similar fashion unless the media takes to heart the criticism of Klobuchar and apologizes for coverage that holds women to an entirely different standard than men.
It should escape no ones notice that after the media flogged Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., for not being likable enough but exempted the grouchy, irascible Sen. Bernie get-those-kids-off-my-lawn Sanders, I-Vt., from similar scrutiny, she is on the upswing and his poll numbers are falling. Not only does there seem to be a double standard for subjective evaluations, but also the medias evaluation of highly gender-driven characteristics doesnt seem to predict voter reaction very well. (Meaning its sexist and wrong.)

Yes, by the "right wing" Jennifer Rubin from the left wing WaPo. She has been a strong critic of Trump so we love her here..

(16,398 posts)And believe Rubins accounting of it to be over the top. By any standard it was mild, and was the exception in what was otherwise a good working relationship. If anything I thought he was too easy on some of the staff who were frankly struggling badly at their jobs in spots. The things her complained about were entirely legitimate, unlike berating someone over a salad.

(2,113 posts)Because he was in no way mean or abusive to his staff. HE joked at the end about it but his "mean" moments didn't even include a raised voice. It was having high expectations and quite calmly voicing that he wasn't satisfied with not being given information he felt he needed or communications with other people that were important.
It's just another example of the press writing horrendously misleading stories without actually doing the work to verify that it's true.

(42,770 posts)Secondly, I was around him, here during his campaign in TX. I don't think I have ever met a more kind and loving person toward every human being he was in contact with.
He may have bit off more than he can chew. He excelled because he connected with all walks of life and political persuasions here. He visited all counties. Obviously, he can't visit every county in the US. Hope it's not too late for him to bow out and run for Senator in TX. He would be fantastic !

(2,113 posts)She is running for that Senate seat and Beto will NOT run against her.
As for the article being posted here...just another inaccurate and divisive article posted about one of the most genuinely GOOD people ever to run for political office. The man puts out an incredible Climate Plan, a great plan to protect women's reproductive rights and now a phenomenal Immigration Plan and people are posting negative crap about him instead of things that matter. It seems like Democrats are desperate to eat their own....again.

(42,770 posts)such a hands on/meet with the people talent. One person can only physically get to everywhere in a state, not an entire country. And, he excels in this environment.
If anything, he needs a better staff, IMHO? I watched him tonight stumble on a question I saw him asked two weeks ago.....why isn't anyone in congress approving funding to alleviate border humanitarian needs? I know he's not in congress anymore - but strikes me after flubbing the first time, your staff would research for you to find the current status/issues. OR you yourself would be curious as hell - being from a border town and find out yourself.
But it's not about me. It's a passion of Chris Cuomo - kids/people suffering at border. So anyone watching saw the same thing.

(2,113 posts)Beto NEVER gives that short of answers, lol. I highly suspect that he did answer the question more thoroughly but it was cut off. In all honesty, as someone who has been watching all of his livestreams, I do NOT trust the national media to be honest about anything Beto says in a pre-recorded interview. I've seen them flat out lie too many times in the last couple of months because they have said things that are in absolute direct conflict with what I witness on livestreams with my own eyes and ears.
His campaign manager only just moved to El Paso to work full time. I think she has kids that were finishing school. They've just hired a bunch of new staff members and they are hiring a TON of new staff members.
The REAL reason he has been unfairly attacked is because he said that Netanyahu is a racist or is intentionally pandering to racist factions. He ALSO made it clear he supports Israel and a two state solution and doesn't think the current leadership on either side are good brokers of peace. It was at that point when some journalists started bashing the hell out of him and lying about him.
