3. To whom was that promise made?

Obama sentimental and romantic versions of the founding and progress of the US. I loved it then.
Now it sounds more like going back to forgetting the flaws in our founding, pretending we have come a long way, restoring order with a good white man at the helm.

4. I see it differently.

In the Democratic Party, we value diversity.

Biden is doing well and just happens to be a white man. He happens to come from Obama’s administration, which a lot of us miss.

We, as a party, will rally around our candidate no matter what their age, gender, sexual orientation or race happens to be. Not everyone will, of course. The Susan Sarandons of the world will still whine and sit it out.

Democrats, as a party, are fired up for change. I see the mid-term gains in the house as evidence of the power of our votes. We will turn out in droves no matter what.

6. I understand that

At the same time, I am aware of the fact that some people have never been included or have been left behind while a few have been afforded tremendous opportunity because the capitalism still revered was built on slavery as was permitted by the founding documents.
The virulent racism that bubbled to the surface had continued from those early days with the help of institutional racism that had been licensed by good white people who participated under more subtle policies and rhetoric. I would like to hear him call out the racist narrative of the mythical welfare queen, and discuss the origin of modern policing and prison labor.
White male supremacy thrived through Obama's presidency, as healthily as concentrated wealth. And the persistent disdain toward poor people, immigrants, and non-white citizens is not an coincidence. It is also no accident that states are passing legislation that will force white women to have more children.
It's easy to criticize the white supremacists in Charlottesville. It takes real courage to do the work to dismantle what keeps them conformable with their hate.
I don't see a promise to get along with their more gentle supporters in Congress as encouraging. There is still time and he has loyal support. I fear that most of it comes from people who don't see where we deserve better than what he has given in the past.

7. I feel that we deserve better than Trump - do you?

As long as Trump is in power, he empowers the racists and encourages the racism that you referenced. He. Must. Go.

I, for one, am grateful that we have someone in the race who can actually get rid of Trump. That happens to be Joe - it’s greatly unlikely that any other Democratic candidate would beat Trump, head to head. Real talk.

We need Joe more than he needs the Presidency and I am glad that he stepped forward...

8. We agree on that

But I don't agree that Biden is the only person who can beat him. And I disagree that getting rid of Trump will solve our biggest problems. It goes beyond him and there are more to come if we don't stop to the white complicity that propelled him to the WH. It starts with looking at where we have made our mistakes and facing our own part in maintaining white male supremacy.
Reparations for what white people built and continue to benefit from are long overdue and we have been going in the opposite direction since reconstruction. What we know as normal is winning at the expense of justice and by forgetting the sins of our forefathers and their successors.
I want to have a candidate who will admit flaws and failures and show some regret for them. Every time I hear a justification or denial of damage of crime bill, it is the sound of a defense of soft oppressors protecting agressors.
There is still time to show some learning, and I hope to see it but am not optimistic. I'm glad we have candidates who get it and are not afraid of hurting white men's feelings by talking seriously about racism without platitudes and referencing a romantic revision of our founding and what brought us to this moment.

into submission to agree to reparations.
