Julian Castro 2020: What you need (and want) to know about the presidential candidate

Julian Castro is sometimes considered the other Texan running for the 2020 presidential nomination, but his political resume is arguably wider and deeper than that of his cross-state rival, former U.S. Rep. Beto O'Rourke.

At 44, Castro can boast of serving in a president's cabinet and running Texas' second-largest city of San Antonio, where he was mayor for five years and a councilman for four.

He was among the first Democrats out of the gate for the right to challenge President Donald Trump in November 2020, but as the field swelled to upward of two dozen candidates, Castro is struggling to gain traction and struggling to raise the money needed to drive a message and attract a national following.



Growing up Castro

When he gave the keynote address at the 2012 Democratic National Convention, Castro told his prime time audience that she and his twin brother, Joaquin, were raised by their mother and grandmother in working-class San Antonio.
