CHICAGO — Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) talked about his experiences protesting racial discrimination as a college student here at a rally Sunday at the Navy Pier.

Sanders, who kicked off his second campaign for the White House last month, also railed against racial disparities, voter suppression, and an unjust criminal justice system.

“The reason I tell you all of this is because my activities here in Chicago taught me a very important lesson that I have never forgotten,” he said. “And that is that whether it is the struggle against corporate greed or against racism, sexism, homophobia, environmental devastation or war and militarism, real change never places from top on down. It always takes place from the bottom on up

“Today, the infant mortality rate in black communities is more than double the rate for white communities,” he said, "and the death rates from cancer and almost every disease is far higher for blacks."

If you look at actual statistical data, over the last 58 years, African Americans and Hispanics have progressively closed the income gap with Whites, the situation today is not perfect, but there has been a lot of progress.

I tend to favor candidates that have actually faced problems and solved them, that is why Hickenlooper tops my list followed by Biden, Warren and Bullard (if he enters). I am not into the big talkers that throw around pie in the sky ideas that are impossible to turn into reality, maybe ill informed young people and some others get jazzed up by that, but not me.

the issues POC face. As a WOC, Bernie IMO addresses the issues I face better than most politicians do. The issues we face are usually brought out by some at election time. Bernie talks about those issues consistently.

All of the Democratic candidstes need to be vetted on how they have contributed to anti-racist policies. But that broader discussion doesn't happen. As you say, the campaigns feature candidates visiting black churches and making promises, but the legislative agendas do not reflect a heightened, consistent commitment to anti-racist policies. We'll see if that changes after Democrats seize victory in 2020.

with other countries? He's not. You consider what he, among others Democrats like Schumer and Sherrod Brown, says about trade tariffs and to be "attacks" on Mexico and China? That's pretty much a part of their jobs is to discuss those things. So lets go with the tariffs on China that you see as racist because Canada wasn't included.

https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-china-tariff-democrats-praise-gop-slams-2018-6

On the other end of the spectrum, a number of Democrats applauded Trump's decision. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who long pressured Trump to crack down on China, praised the tariffs.
"The president's actions on China are on the money," Schumer said. "China is our real trade enemy, and their theft of intellectual property and their refusal to let our companies compete fairly threatens millions of future American jobs. While we await further details on this trade action, President Trump is right on target."

Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown of Ohio, who is up for re-election this fall, also celebrated Trump's move.
"China's cheating has shuttered steel plants across our state, put Ohioans out of work, and distorted global markets," Brown said. "Today's tariffs are an important step toward enforcing trade laws and making clear the U.S. will not allow China to cheat Americans out of their jobs."

While Democrats don't agree with Trump often, the party has long been more skeptical of the benefits of free trade. Many Democrats were against the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) free trade deal, despite the TPP being advanced by President Barack Obama. Even in the 1990s, more of the party's members voted against the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) than Republicans.

Here's what I wonder TomCADem . If Bernie were against trade tariffs , knowing that Schumer and Brown support them, would they would still be considered "attacks" on China by you? I really won't bother to respond to your other claims of Bernie's "attacks" on China and Mexico . To complain about one Senator and accuse him of attacking China because he supported tariffs, while ignoring the fact that other Democratic leaders support tariffs negates your position that Bernie is attacking China.

Shaun King said it best and this can apply to any politician, not just Bernie

"When you don’t like someone, or even worse, if you hate them, you see everything that person does, even the genuinely good stuff, through the filter of your hate."

...as I explain in the following post, Sherrod Brown actually illustrates the illogic of Bernie's shifting positions on steel tariffs, which can only make sense if he is simply trying to appeal to white resentment:

“I think you know there are a lot of white folks out there who are not necessarily racist who felt uncomfortable for the first time in their lives about whether or not they wanted to vote for an African-American,” Sanders told The Daily Beast, referencing the close contests involving Andrew Gillum in Florida and Stacey Abrams in Georgia and ads run against the two.
