An internal poll of 17 states taken by Mr. Trump’s campaign showed one possible opponent, former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr., overtaking Mr. Trump in a head-to-head contest, according to people familiar with the numbers. Mr. Trump fared better in a matchup against Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, but Mr. Trump’s low approval numbers were dragging him down against the Democrats. It was unclear whether the campaign poll-tested anyone else in the field.

1. Early Days Yet

This is heartening news, but it is way too early to look at this as a horserace. Numbers will change. This election is basically going to be a prolonged street fight.

Trump will be whipping up anger with his rallies, which are the core of his election plan- get the base fired up and rely on all the free media that Trump gets.

We need a candidate who can counter-punch and go the distance. No playing nice. A brawler. I think Joe Biden could be that guy. He is normally polite and polished, but he can throw elbows as well.

Anyway, I am glad that early polls show Trump getting beaten, but we need to stay sharp and focused. This is going to be a long campaign with many battles along the way. We intend to win the War.
