Presidential Candidates tell stories of their fathers, from the stump

Martin and Tom O'Malley

Martin O’Malley’s father, Tom, was a World War II veteran, who “flew 33 missions over Japan in a B-24 Liberator and went on to college only because of the G.I. Bill,” as Mr. O’Malley explained in his announcement speech.

Mr. O'Malley, the former governor of Maryland, credits his parents for the optimism he says he has for the future of the country. “But they would never accept the notion that somehow theirs was the Greatest Generation,” Mr. O’Malley told the crowd in Baltimore. “For they believed and they taught us that every generation of Americans has the ability and the sacred responsibility to make themselves great for their country."

My dad was not a professional asshole, but he was an accomplished amateur. He would be very quick to say his generation was the greatest, and take his full share of credit for every good thing they did. He went to school on the GI Bill, but dropped out. I went to school on the GI Bill and finished, so I make my dad look bad. Not good when you're running for office.
