(3,544 posts)I am going to do this on all my future receipts. It's the least ALL OF US can do.

(3,544 posts)So earlier I said what an excellent idea this was. Well, after dinner out, I put the same exact message on my receipt. Within minutes the waitress came over and gave me a high 5, and asked if she could post in on Facebook. She showed me the pic she took, where her hand was covering the name and account number. I said, by all means, please do. OMG, we talked for quite a while, gave each other high 5's, got a hug, and gave her my last Bernie sticker.
See....... It works.
I'm 1 for 1.

(17,931 posts)...on a $41 tab. Roughly 36%. When I worked in the industry while in college in the late 70s, a 36% tip would more than make me smile.
The total was .50 off, wonder if that will make a difference? Does the server get the extra .50 cents?

(15,313 posts)Just like most chains. It goes into a general pool that can be distributed to the operator and parceled out to the staff, as the operator sees fit.
I always leave tip in cash and wait around to make sure the person that supplied the good service could receive it. If s/he wanted to add it to a pool for distribution, great.
Sort of like when I check out of a hotel room. I'll try to remember who I've seen helping and give them something special directly. Paris Hilton doesn't need my measly bucks.

(7,813 posts)I waitressed for a while in college. Though I knew that there were a lot more, I got exactly ONE credit card tip in my paycheck the entire time I worked at that restaurant. Ever since, I made sure that I tipped well and that it was on the table, never on the credit card. You are relying on the honesty of whoever is doing the books and that is hard to come by in some establishments. The tip is between me and the server, and nobody else.

(15,313 posts)And I think that most staff will be fair with their coworkers. Can't say that's true about the business owners.
This seems to be the "american" model of entrepreneurship - you know the "makers". Screw the ones that do the work.
Other countries (surprise!) don't use tips as a bargaining point. If there is exceptional service, a compliment or a light touch might happen, but isn't expected. (Oh, I should say that the Parisian cafe's have waiters that can smell an american a block away and will expect to get a tip++ since the american doesn't know better.)
In AMERICA: "We only need to pay you $3.75/hour since you'll get filthy rich off that table of 10 barnyard omnivores." The ones that are obnoxious, find faults with everything, and leave with trash and maybe a few pennies.

(666 posts)Since they aren't paid minimum wage either, so the pooled tips are supposedly distributed among those we don't normally think to tip. The restaurant industry seems unfair all around.
