Bernie Sanders
Related: About this forumHillary Clinton tried to beat Barack Obama in 2008 by running a racially divisive campaign, and the
Democratic party has, overall, given her a pass.
Probably the highlight of her racially divisive campaign:
I have a much broader base to build a winning coalition on, she said in the interview, citing an article by The Associated Press.
It found how Senator Obamas support among working, hard-working Americans, white Americans, is weakening again, and how whites in both states who had not completed college were supporting me.
Theres a pattern emerging here, she said.
Oliver Willis is currently working for Media Matters, which was founded by David Brock, the individual in charge of the pro-Clinton Super PAC, Correct the Record, which went negative against Bernie. Heres what Oliver said in 2008:
[W]orking, hard-working Americans, white Americans. She really said that. Wow.
Congratulations, Hillary Clinton, you win the prize for the first Democratic Bigot Eruption since Ive been keeping track of this. Even professional haters like Pat Buchanan and his ilk arent so balls-out about racism. Youve been getting your ass handed to you and especially among black voters. This shows me once again that we who are apparently lazy and shiftless non-Americans based on your definition have yet again been a leading indicator.

Lots of good research here about the Clintons' race-baiting in 2008.
I still don't understand why she polls so well with PoC.

(14,459 posts)If you're a PoC, the last thing you want to do is vote republican- they'll throw you in jail or kill you without a second though. It's a nasty way to campaign though- "Vote for me to have the best chance of not electing a Republican. I won't do anything to help you, and in fact I may push policies that will hurt you and your families, but the alternative is MUCH worse."

(24,411 posts)Do you remember when she said, "I'll take him at his word that he is a Christian". When pushed further, she responded that Obama was not a Muslim and that there was no evidence of that, "as far as I know." That was Hillary's response to a reporter asking her if she thought Barack Obama was a Muslim.
This was not an error, nor was it unintentional.
The remark came at a very tumultuous time for Obama, when the entire country was questioning his background, and many Republicans were suggesting that he was a Muslim. Right-wing radio was on fire, suggesting that Obama was not a Christan. Rudolph Giuliani had questioned Obama's patriotism and seemed to link those remarks with Obama's background and upbringing.
For Hillary to pull that, was--unconscionable.
Yes, she did it in 2008. Yes, she'll do it again. Whatever chips away at her opponent.

(14,459 posts)It's just what she does. I want to believe she was better than this once, that the interview with Sen. Warren showed us that once, a very long time ago, she cared about bigger things than being the first woman president. Or being one of the 1%.

(24,411 posts)In December of 2007, when it was evident that Obama was polling better--Bob Kerrey, senator from Nebraska came into Iowa to endorse Hillary. It was a big deal and plenty of media attended.
Kerry said this to a Washington Post reporter, "I like the fact that his name is Barack Hussein Obama, and that his father was a Muslim and that his paternal grandmother is a Muslim."
Again, this was during a time when Obama was being positioned as a Muslim--and battling hard to overcome these right-wing attacks on his Christianity and his patriotism.
This happened several weeks before the Iowa caucus. This is what Hillary does.
She was criticized in Iowa for being impersonal and too corporate, so her response to the criticism was to hold a Q&A town-hall style event. An Iowa reporter discovered that all of the audience questioners were her staffers with planted questions.
Do we really want someone like this as our next President when we've got other candidates who don't engage in this kind of nonsense?

(9,497 posts)when I think of why Latinos poll for H.
She really has done jack and she has said flippantly that she would send children back to Honduras and the rest of Central America. I can not think beyond the Primaries when I have to think of her.
I won't allow myself to even imagine having to blacken an oval next to her name. It will be Bernie all the way.

(449 posts)I'm so glad that Sanders and O'Malley are in this. To think she was so close to running unopposed with people up and down the party line actively clearing a path for her. Ugh. That is NOT democracy.
Bernie Sanders stood up for her and no one even asked him to. He just did... Because he could. He seems to be a good guy from things I've seen. I get the feeling when people start paying attention a bit more (January) you'll see a flip in the polls. Fingers crossed.

But, if you mean that "safe" choice, bullshit, I'd suggest people look at the polling regarding who does better against the GOP in the general.

(17,651 posts)That was some really slimeball crap she played and told me EVERYdamnTHING I need to know about Mr. and Mrs. Clinton. I don't care how many black folks choose to wallow in the amnesia. Whenever I meet up with friends or family, I remind them of how that all went down.
She pulled out all stops when her back was against the wall even wooing the crackers with lots of red meat.
THIS black woman, when given a choice, says hell-to-the-naw to Hillary.

(11,366 posts)My son is half Arabic. I certainly know how PoC are treated by the authorities. Even though my son isn't Muslim, he still has a Muslim name and wants to go to college in Atlanta. While I want him to realize his dreams, it scares me to think how he might be treated by the police in a big city. They don't treat Muslims (or perceived Muslims) with any more dignity than they do AAs.
