DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – The first democratic primary debate aired live on CNN from Las Vegas Tuesday night, with five presidential hopefuls vying to stand out.

A watch party was held at Trolley Stop in Dayton where democratic voters here at home say they also want to hear from the lesser-known candidates.

“Improving our schools, not getting into unnecessary wars across the planet, raising the living wage in America so we don’t have masses of poor people,” says Bernie Sanders supporter, David Sparks.

Those are issues, Sparks says are important to him.

“Down the line these are the things we really agree with and we think can make this a better country to live in for all of the people,” says Sparks.

“I’m certainly interested in what all of the candidates have to say going into the presidential election,” says Dayton native, Maria Barrett.

That’s why she says she’s giving all those running her full attention.

“I want someone who’s interested in increasing the minimum wage. So that lower and middle income families have a better chance to provide a roof and food for their family,” says Barrett about an issue that hits home.

“I come from a family of divorce struggled to support my professional career and my own children. I understand what new policies and new ideas might mean to a middle class American like myself,” Barrett says.

Antioch College senior, David Schopmeyer says he’s looking for a candidate who will make America more of a level playing field.

“It seems like a lot of the problems we have nowadays stem from the fact that a lot of the rules in our system of government cater to those who are on the, who have more power,” Schopmeyer, a soon to be graduate asks voters to listen to both sides.

“Yes, i’m a democrat but I’ve tried to hear the republican side as well. We’re all in this together and we really need to be a good community and part of a strong nation. If we don’t work together, we’re going to fall apart,” says Schopmeyer.

The second Democratic Presidential debate is scheduled for November 14th in Des Moines, Iowa.
