Bernie Sanders
Related: About this forumNPR's non apology, Apology........ for not covering Sanders
NPR is the latest media outlet to respond after receiving scrutiny from their audience regarding coverage of presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders.
This comes just one day following a blog post from The New York Times Public Editor responding to angry readers announcing she will perform a content analysis of Sanders coverage.
The segment triggering outrage was on Joe Bidens potential run, with Mara Liasson closing her piece saying, There are many Democrats who think it would be good for Hillary Clinton because shed have a serious opponent
Right now, shes basically running against herself and her problems.
NPR Audience & Community Relations has apologized to listener Colleen Shaddox via email saying the running against herself reference was intended to mean that her campaign is being buffeted in large part by issues related to things shes done including using a private email server.
The comment in question came after Liasson was asked when Biden needs to make a decision, she responded by going on to question whether his third presidential run would be good for the Democrats saying the party wants competition.
Even though its unclear how NPR drew the conclusion that Lisson was actually talking about Clintons email scandal rather than the Democratic Party wishing Clinton had some competition, this goes to show the huge outlets like NPR and the Times rely on the publics satisfaction.
While we await Sullivans findings, Sanders supporters can at least celebrate another small victory in the quest to end the Bernie Blackout.

One Readers response
NO, they did not apologize! I read the link, and a few other articles about the situation as well (including a very detailed discussion by someone at Vermont Public Radio) and ALL of them come across as "well, we're sorry you took it that way but that's not what we meant." This is the same logic as "well, I'm sorry that what I said offended you, but its not what I meant to do, so I am not in the wrong for saying whatever insensitive thing I just said" and counting it as an apology.
They cherry pick the comment from the end of the discussion and explain it away in context. Had I not listened to the whole piece, I may havce accepted the logic, but there are a half dozen moments or more where Mara Liasson performed bizarrely intense verbal gymnastics to avoid mentioning Bernie.
From the discussion about Biden, "The biggest question is what does he offer that's unique, that's different from Hillary Clinton?," then, "He certainly can't capture the antiestablishment fever that's been sweeping the Democratic Party base," but no mention of what is behind this fever, or who might be coaxing it along. There is no way that she did not intend to leave out Sanders, and a real apology would have said explicitly that the discussion was poorly handled and unfairly unbalanced.
I encourage everyone to contact NPR and express that we are not satisfied with this defense and want to see NPR conduct themselves differently.

(57,936 posts)Pacifica is good radio, informative and challenging -- and I say that although I disagree with its stance on Israel/Palestine. I think Pacifica is extremely one-sided in its Israel/Palestine reporting. To a very annoying point.
Other than that, I strongly recommend dropping NPR and listening to Pacifica stations if you possibly can.

Also, the DNC and Democratic politicians are ignoring him or undermining him, even though he is running as a Democrat and not as a spoiler. And, despite all that, he gets hug crowds and rises in the polls. That, too, is news.
ETA: Wait, they did a story on how a Biden run might help Hillary's campaign based on a mere rumor that Biden might run? They called that news, but don't deem anything about Bernie's run newsworthy?
Fucking liars.

(28,799 posts)if it's about Hillary it's about email. but almost every time they do the news, it's republicans. makes me sick. it's all personality and no issues. i think the entire corporate media - sadly having to include npr in this description - is creating a self-fulfilling prophecy in which a republican takes the white house and republicans rule all the houses of government and what a disaster that playing out would be is damn near unbearable to even think about. but it feels almost inevitable. can't watch rachel any more - seems all she talks about is republicans. can't listen to npr - republicans, republicans, republicans, oh and hillary has email. so often the democrats are blamed for not representing themselves well enough in the press. i don't even think that's true - the press is OWNED just like congress and is not working for the people anymore. the oligarchy is having their way.

(16,847 posts)Public tv has a lot of good shows, although their news needs some work. But NPR isn't that much different from CBS, as far as I can tell. I'll continue to support public tv, but NPR will have to earn my support. I support my state's public radio programming, but not the national bullshit.

It only goes with their right leaning "news." They are now considered by me as Fox News Ultra Light.
