Intrade was fun to follow but its operations violated about a dozen SEC rules and several federal securities laws. Now you can use this New Zealand service or directly place a bet with the Irish bookies. For this system to work, you need an active and informed public market. There were some allegations of price fixing on Intrade with people playing games with taking positions at the close of trading and these complaints led to the SEC looking at Intrade and then shutting it down when it became clear that it was violating several US securities laws.

Intrade was fun because there were a number of wall street types and other professional traders using that board and so the markets were active and helpful.
