Sanders wows the crowd in North Charleston

Sanders wows the crowd in North Charleston

A large and enthusiastic crowd greeted presidentical candidate Bernie Sanders on Saturday as the Vermont senator brought his campaign to the Charleston Area Convention Center in North Charleston. Paul Zoeller/Staff

Democratic candidate for president Bernie Sanders finished his two-day tour of South Carolina here Saturday night, collectively drawing the largest and most enthusiastic crowds seen by any hopeful — from either party — this election season.

...

His topics ranged from advocating free public college tuition, expanding health care, ending mass incarceration, pressing for racial justice and protecting minorities of all sectors, naming gays, new immigrants and women in the workforce.

...

Estimates put the total attendance from his four stops in Greenville, Columbia, Sumter and North Charleston this weekend at around 9,500 people hearing his message over the past two days. The Charleston stop drew about one-third of the total, at about 3,150, the campaign said.

The crowd Saturday was overwhelmingly white, meaning Sanders has work to do in integrating his support if he wants to be successful in the Democrats’ Feb. 27 presidential primary. Still, there were several black voters in the crowd who said they were backing him fully, rejecting front-runner Clinton.

“African-Americans still have a bad taste in their mouth from the 2008 election because of the hateful things that Hillary and Bill Clinton said about our president, Barack Obama,” said John Moore of St. Helena, pointing toward the Clinton-Obama feud for the nomination that year.

Seems Hillary supporters are assuming she's got a lock on their vote this time.

The Hillbots today, said that they didn't think enough POC were at Bernie's events.

My response was that it sounded like SHE would then just take that voting segment for granted...funny they hard no response.

I cannot imagine that all issues that are problematic for the 99%, are not problems for POC as well.

I hope they will listen and understand how much of a mess we have become...SHE is going to do nothing.

and how they have worked or not worked mostly, for AAs. So it's a different time and the fact is now there is a candidate who was RIGHT about those policies at the time, who foresaw the harm they would do. And that is why we are seeing the rush to try to discredit him BEFORE minorities get to know him for themselves. Because his record on the issues is so obviously the complete opposite of the front runner, and his judgement so right on where those policies would lead, that it is creating a real problem for the status quo.

Bernie is certainly leading the way on making this campaign about Issues.

Too bad if their choices of candidates don't exactly stand out as shining examples regarding their records on some of the most important issues that faced this country over the past decades.

Fortunately we have those records so we can better judge for ourselves, who demonstrated real judgement and that other quality necessary in a good leader, an ability to foresee the results of policies years later. See Bernie's prescient forewarnings regarding the Iraq War eg as he cast HIS vote against it.

Including taking things out of context and then having fake outrage over it's own misinterpretation and refusal to admit it was wrong.

The "3 AM phone call" ad fed into the "lazy" racist stereotype.

Saying, "I think so." about Obama's citizenship.

that a candidate for the Democratic Presidential nomination endorsed a Republican for President over a fellow Democrat.

And about Islam, "I take him at his word."

–In lobbying the late Sen. Ted Kennedy to endorse his wife, former President Bill Clinton angered the liberal icon by belittling Obama. Telling a friend about the conversation, Kennedy recalled Clinton had said “a few years ago, this guy would have been getting us coffee,” the authors paraphrase. A spokesman for the former president declined to comment on the claim.

Just the right tone -- genuine -- and he hit the most important points. It is a pity that there weren't more AAs there because they would have known and loved him.
