That was a great conversation. I had never heard of Killer Mike before the primary season, but I really like and respect how he thinks and lives.

When I think of someone like Chris Matthews, I realize what a comparatively good interviewer Smiley is.

3. Smiley really is good.

I've seen him interview a few people who weren't as compelling in conversation even if they had a compelling message, art, or point of view. But more often than not, Smiley is able to guide a conversation that is as interesting to listen to as it is compelling in subject matter. This was a home-run.

I would take Tavis Smiley over Chris Matthews any day.

5. And, unlike Baba Wawa, Smiley doesn't even ask his subjects what kind of tree they

would be, or try to make them cry.

He's just good. I think that is because he knows, and is genuinely interested in, his subjects before he begins the interview.

9. I had a brief encounter with Tavis at LAX...

He was getting out of a car to go into a terminal as I was coming out...I walked by and thought, hey, I know that face. He must have seen me stop so suddenly and when I turned around he was looking at me and said, That was a sudden stop!

Talked about 2 minutes...really, really warm man.
