Bernie Sanders
Related: About this forumHere’s why Bernie Sanders plans to speak at Liberty University next month
(snip)
It goes without saying that my views on many issues -- womens rights, gay rights, education and many other issues -- are very different from the opinions of some in the Liberty University community, Sanders, a self-described democratic socialist who is Jewish, said Wednesday night, in comments relayed by a spokesman.
But Sanders said he would like to see if we can reach consensus regarding the grotesque level of income and wealth inequality in our country, about the collapse of the middle class, about the high level of childhood poverty, about climate change and other issues.
Sanders, who has emerged as the leading alternative to Hillary Rodham Clinton for the Democratic nomination, said he accepted the universitys invitation to speak Sept. 14. The university, which was founded by the late Rev. Jerry Falwell, holds convocations three times a week, which it bills as North Americas largest weekly gathering of Christian students.
(snip)
It is very easy for a candidate to speak to people who hold the same views, Sanders said. Its harder but important to reach out to others who look at the world differently. I look forward to meeting with the students and faculty of Liberty University.

hosted for politicians. Said something like, "Maybe we can't agree on XYZ (which included abortion), but maybe we can agree on ABC. It was met with misquoting him, many wtfs and so on.

The firefighters were there to hear about union issues, safety issues, the possibility of federal funding via the Homeland Security budget, etc. However, Bernie and only Bernie, was expected to try to make sure the members of the firefighters union became pro-abortion after one speech from him at the beginning of his cafmpaign.
Meanwhile, the fact that Hillary didn't even show up, went without mention, as did the fact that neither O'Malley, Webb nor any other politician present mentioned abortion or any other social issue. In fact, O'Malley is being lauded on the same thread.
Now you know.

(62,325 posts)does something rational, like talking to ALL demographics all of whom, or most, do vote and why not get a few of those votes for a candidate for the Dem nomination?
Lol, they are funny. Pragmatism, OUT THE WINDOW!

(45,251 posts)absolute on social issues. However, only a day ago, I did an OP about equal rights for gays; and there was a lot of "pragmatism" (or something) around that, too. But, when Bernie just honestly says, we may not agree about certain things, but I know we can probably agree about others, that's unforgivable.
It isn't even about double standards anymore. You have to be a shapeshifter to keep up.

It's about trying to keep the Democratic base while pursuing personal ambition and personal benefit.
Republicans always said, "Hey, we like the guys with the money and privatizing and we hate taxes and government. That's who we are." So, they pursue that agenda and seem strong and free of disconnects.
Democrats want to pursue that agenda, but have always said, "Hey, we're for the little guy and gal and think government and social safety nets should be there for them, even if it means bigger government and a bit more taxes on everyone who can afford it."
So, now it's "Aw, geez, the stupid assholes across the aisle thwarted us yet again. If you're as outraged about that as we are, send us a donation. Quick!"

That is exactly why I donate to Bernie. So Americans can hear certain truths that politicians, including many current Democratic politicians, find highly inconvenient.
On the issues that I suspect he will stress at Liberty U, Bernie is to the right of Frankie Two Sticks AND the big JC. If he goes armed with some New Testament Bible verses, what can they say? Hope he does.
The fact that they are even open to hearing from a pro-abortion, candidly non-religious, Jewish politician alone is a good sign, IMO.

(19,537 posts)If there are many there with concerns like this guy had in this right wing article on "Obamatrade" (TPP), there are many ways then to appeal to even the Republican base where many of them are vulnerable too for perhaps being too much of a corporate sellout that would have them support someone like Bernie where they might not support Hillary who likely has similar stances on TPP that many Republicans (and their candidates) do.
http://chuckbaldwinlive.com/Articles/tabid/109/ID/3329/Democrats-And-GOP-Rebels-Save-The-Day-On-Obamatrade.aspx
I'm guessing that in addition to TPP, there are other more populist stances on issues that he might find some interest in that corporate Democrats have been ignoring too.
