Presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders said he's "very fond" of Vice President Joe Biden, but that "the American people... want to go beyond conventional establishment politics."
Sanders made the statements in response to a question from ABC News' Jonathan Karl about Biden considering another run for president.
Sanders suggested that voters are looking for a change in 2016 . The government has to respond to the needs of the middle class, not the billionaires, he said, I think thats what going on in this country, and I am not sure conventional politics will do it anymore.

(32,067 posts)There is a very strong anti-Bush/Clinton vibe whether the mainstream press wants to accept it or not. I think folks like Bernie and on the other side Rand Paul and Scott Walker (gag) are going to be the stronger candidates simply because people are broke and fed-up - and want to hear new voices. Many have already given up on the political process. Joe Biden is not going to be the person who excites them and brings them back to the voting booth.

Anyway: the senator continues to get to the heart of the matter in the shortest, most succinct-yet-diplomatic fashion:

(7,723 posts)people are freaking sick and freaking tired of conventional centrist politics and Bernie is the most honest candidate who speaks to all the people with real solutions.

(12,882 posts)it's that very frustration that's keeping Trump on top. He just appeals to a mental strata - those with heads of solid oak. And his notoriety reaches farther than Bernie's.

(62,325 posts)that is so extreme even the current extreme Repub party is too 'liberal' for them. I doubt they've even looked at Trump's stand on major issues. All they heard was 'IMMIGRANTS'.
Eg, he opposed the Iraq War and wants to protect SS and Welfare! Lol.
Anyhow, Bernie beats him by a wide margin in recent polls. Something like 58% to 30%.
Trump doesn't have a chance of winning the GE.

(11,945 posts)He doesn't seem to take himself very seriously, despite the exaggerated gruffness and scowling. There is something bogus about his entire act. Republicans are a strange, unsavory group.

And if the DNC starts polling which I'm sure they are doing right now, and finds out Biden is a threat to HILLARY not Benrie, he won't run.

(11,945 posts)Business as usual types. He really doesn't have much to say to Bernie's followers.
Oh but I hope you're not right about his pulling out if he's a threat to Hillary. He does have ambitions.

(62,325 posts)and that huge non-voting bloc, many already signing up for Bernie's campaign feeling that maybe they have finally found someone who makes it worth while to get involved again.
Also the young, Bernie has an overwhelming amount of support from young people.
The reasons should be obvious.
A lot of Hillary's support comes from only the base of the Dem Party, some because they want a woman (I spoke to someone recently who has found out about Bernie eg, she loves him 'but I have always wanted a woman in the WH'. I told her I did too, but not a woman who is so closely tied to Wall St, who supports all the neocon wars, who had to evolve on so many important issues and has been wrong so often about those issues.
Biden and Hillary are status quo candidates. The country is angry at the status quo.
Bernie is already attracting moderate Repubs, left leaning Libertarians fed up and feeling they were scammed by Rand Paul eg.
So yes, if Biden runs the competition for votes will be only for the remaining base of the Dem Party and Bernie is already making inroads even there. That comprises only 32% of registered voters. Bernie already has about 20% of that small portion of the electorate and will gain more as more learn about him.
But no one can win even with ALL of their base, which won't happen. They must have crossover appeal, Bernie has that, status quo politicians do not.
I do hope Biden runs. It will be Bernie's gain.

(13 posts)I want to thank you so much for writing that - it really resonates well with me because you do understand where a LOT of people are coming from. The party hacks doesn't really get it, and until they are hit by a clue by four, they will probably never understand what Bernie represents. Sure, he is no Obama, but I think Bernie transcends them all, and has for the last 40 years - we need someone to push the way. Bernie is it, and I'm happy to say that Bernie is indeed a very rare bird that comes once in a lifetime.

(62,325 posts)believe frankly. They spend so much money polling and figuring out what their chosen candidates can and cannot say and the very fact that they HAVE to poll to try to figure it out shows how far removed they are from the people.
Our job is to get to those people who have given up on the entire system and tell them about Bernie.
Once the learn about him many of them ARE becoming enthused again not because of what he is saying NOW but because he has a long record that assuages their fears that this is just more campaign rhetoric.
Once in a lifetime! Yes, and if we don't take this chance, then we may as well just sit back and watch as it all continues to go downhill for average people.
But I think we CAN do it. I think there is enough anger among the people that they are willing to become active in getting it done.
