U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders defends Laura Moser against national Democrats ahead of Texas trip

U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., said in a Thursday interview he thought it was "outrageous" that the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee had come out against Moser before the primary.U.S. Sen. In an interview Thursday, the Vermont independent and 2016 presidential candidate said he thought it was "outrageous" that the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee had come out against Moser before the 7th Congressional District primary, posting negative research about her in an apparent effort to keep her from advancing. The American people, Sanders added, "want to see serious debate about serious issues, not efforts to tear down candidates."

The Vermont senator said it's "appalling" that the party's congressional campaign arm targeted Laura Moser ahead of Tuesday's primary election. Moser, an activist, is endorsed by Sanders' Our Revolution group.

Sanders told The Associated Press on Wednesday that such attacks are "not acceptable."

Moser advanced to a runoff with Democratic front-runner Lizzie Pannill Fletcher, despite the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee publishing an opposition research memo calling her "a Washington insider who begrudgingly moved to Texas" to run for Congress.

"What these organizations should not be doing is doing negative attacks on Democratic candidates," said Sanders. "That just continues the process of debasing the Democratic system in this country and is why so many people are disgusted with politics."

2. Note, however, that the AP's headline is misleading

It implies that Bernie was denouncing all instances of a Democrat criticizing a Democrat. He wasn't. As the text of the article makes clear, he was denouncing only the situation that arose in Laura Moser's race -- where the criticism of a Democrat came from a party organ (in this case, the DCCC).
