700,000 People Call on Democratic Party to Reject Pacific Trade Deal

July 7, 2016 WASHINGTON – Ahead of the final Democratic platform meeting in Orlando this week, 701,618 people signed petitions calling on the party to go on the record in opposition to holding a vote on the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement after the election.

Jim Hightower, a Sanders delegate in Orlando, plans to offer an amendment to the platform stating, “It is the policy of the Democratic Party that the Trans-Pacific Partnership must not get a vote in this Congress or in future sessions of Congress.”

Hillary Clinton and Sen. Bernie Sanders agree that the Pacific trade deal should not come up for a vote after the election. In May, Clinton wrote, “I oppose the TPP agreement — and that means before and after the election.”

Eighty-three percent of Democrats in Congress voted against fast-tracking the trade agreement last year.

“The overwhelming majority of Democrats are strongly opposed to this disastrous trade agreement. If both Secretary Clinton and I agree that the TPP should not get to the floor of Congress this year, it’s hard to understand why this amendment would not be overwhelmingly passed,” Sanders said.

In addition to the Sanders campaign, MoveOn.org, Democracy for America, Working Families Party, GreenPeace, Communications Workers of America, Campaign for America’s Future, Citizen’s Trade, Rootstrikers and People Demanding Action (Florida) collected signatures in support of the amendment to stop the Pacific trade pact from receiving a vote.
