Incrementalism. Because real change is scary.
We get it. Standing up and asking for, if not demanding, what you really want can seem a little daunting. Maybe you don't have a problem with it yourself, whatever *it* is, but surely the neighbors won't get it. They may need more time to understand.
Well gee, so maybe instead of asking for the whole pie, maybe it will be easier, safer, for now, just to ask for a small slice. And then later, another small slice. Eventually we'll work our way to getting more and more of the pie, finally achieving what we wanted!
They say politics is all about compromise. This is a type of compromise right? Right. And just how did that "civil unions" thing work out for you?
News flash: Incrementalism doesn't work. You either have something or you don't. Whether it's equal marriage, equal voting rights, fair and equal pay, or unlimited corporate political clout, there is no "half-way". No incrementalism.
These things are binary. On or off. You either have them in place or you don't.

Now we have cars that are far safer, cleaner, and better performing than ever before. Better air quality and far fewer fatalities. Yet if anything, this has happened in spite of the major auto industry's efforts.
America is a progressive nation. By definition really. Just consider this country's foundation. The American voter generally seems to do the right thing.
Eventually. Really it's all just a matter of how long it takes us to grow a pair.
