- Even Supporters Agree Clinton Has Weaknesses As A Candidate. What Can She Do?, Washington Post, May 15, 2016.
Hillary Clintons declining personal image, ongoing battle to break free of the challenge from Sen. Bernie Sanders and struggle to adapt to an anti-establishment mood among voters this year have become caution signs for her campaign and the focus of new efforts to fortify her position as she prepares for a bruising general election.
More than a dozen Clinton allies identified weaknesses in her candidacy that may erode her prospects of defeating Donald Trump, including poor showings with young women, untrustworthiness, unlikability and a lackluster style on the stump. Supporters also worry that she is a conventional candidate in an unconventional election in which voters clearly favor renegades.
I bring it down to one thing and one thing only, and that is likeability, said Peter Hart, a Democratic pollster who has conducted a series of focus groups for the Annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania.
..None of these Democrats said they expected Clinton to lose but many said she could. For the most part, it is her qualities as a candidate that keep her allies up at night, not her fitness to be president, which they categorically do not question. They also lament how exposed these flaws have become during a long primary contest against Sanders, who has profited from suspicion and dislike of Clinton among ranks she now must win over.
Although Clinton has never trailed Sanders in the delegate count and is all but assured of securing the nomination in June, she is widely expected to lose more Democratic primaries this month, which could amplify her weaknesses. con't.

(812 posts)She's about 280 ahead. With about 900 remaining. So he'd need almost 600 of those.
I'm not saying it can't happen.
The (maybe) bigger question is, what if he comes screaming in across the finish line, firing on all cylinders, winning all the states, but not by enough? What if he's 50 or 100 short?
No matter if she comes limping in on 2 flat tires and a blown out motor, if she comes in first, she comes in first. Do we just leave it at that?

(3,343 posts)Her allies admit that she's unliked and "viewed" as untrustworthy. She's does a poor job with the media and is thin skinned. She doesn't inspire passion. Oh and they admit that she may lose to Trump.
Their hope is that she can be classier than Trump. And that people will hate and fear him more than they hate and fear her.
Hillary 2016.

(3,343 posts)The whole article is damning with faint praise.
"we don't think she's a crap candidate; we just think she looks, acts and behaves like a crap candidate which is why the public distrusts and dislikes her"

(1,587 posts)Okay, not really.
And if she loses too many upcoming primaries, Bernie will have more delegates, so... How's that convention thing work again?

(812 posts)why OR will be anything less than a blowout.
But I guess the fact that it's vote by mail means she won't likely be destroyed as badly as in WA (which requires all that trouble of showing up and standing around for a few hours, which apparently is a lot to ask of HRH supporters).

(41,140 posts)to avoid a loss like neighbor WV, as stated in this CBS article. There were even some wild Oregon polls in the last few days putting Clinton way up, 10 pts. Posters said beware of this stuff very close to elections. Clinton camp is factoring in the mail in system in Oregon for sure. ~ Here's hoping tomorrow is very successful for Berners!

(4,234 posts)Bernie lost in MA b/c of the optiscans there I'm afraid. I'm sure the machines also played a role in a number of other HRC so-called victories.
Each election cycle that people turn their heads instead of screaming bloody murder about the fact that we have for the most part a method of counting votes that is completely unverifiable and/or unverified, the longer we do that, the harder it becomes to change anything because the number of clown politicians in office and on the courts increases.

(8,636 posts).....I hope that HRC will reach the White House weakened, without the public or congressional support for her agenda:
- Privatize or sharply cut Social Security and Medicare,
- sign the TPP, and TTIP and whatever trade deals cross her desk.,
- start another war in the Mid-East,
- destabilize countries in Central and South America to make them amenable to Shock Doctrine takeovers.

(1,268 posts)They vote on the 5th. I've been watching his rally's in PR. He was at University of Puerto Rico today. Appears to have strong support. And also New Mexico appears to be leaning Bernie--same day as Calif. Remember, he needs about 64-65% of remaining delegates. IMO, it is VERY doable.
And yes, I can only think of Oregon as a blowout. Oregon is very progressive. Forgot the delegate count though.

(12,228 posts)Starting with constant pressure and constant suppression of Sanders, but especially his concrete ideas- whatever you think about their value.
You have the inevitable candidate tanking a bit as Biden lingered on the edge of decision. So here big support consited of a lot of doubters. Then she took hits and invariably the pattern of victories and losses was not comforting. Nor was a primary test expected or welcomed. Then inevitability persisted in raising its head by depressing the political power button sometimes in ways that were delightfully incompetent no matter that Sanders was the victim.
The same fears as 2008(minus the Obama hope) persist and are proved and still persist all throughout the inevitability campaign. So we have inevitability, a weak presumptive candidate, a desperately depressing party structure- and fear. Not a little anger, understandably. So the sane political party can think of no way to resolve this positively because the collapse of the presumption is done in a very determined no turning back way.
