Bernie Sanders

At this point, I think it is pretty safe to say that the first thing we need to get done, starting right now, is organizing and passing a constitutional amendment to fix our ridiculous voting system in this country. This needs to be done whether or not Bernie Sanders wins the nomination and/or Presidency.
If we do not start here, then, in my view, we will forever be left to choose the lesser of the two evils. What's more, if nothing is done now, the lesser of those evils is going to become worse and worse until something truly catastrophic happens in this country (again).
We have had hundreds of thousands of citizens see their right to vote denied in this cycle alone. Whether it was a caucus that they couldn't attend due to work issues or a closed primary that they needed to decide on 6 months before voting. Or the number of primary polling stations reduced such that voters had to wait in line for hours, or see their votes not counted due to fraudulent and dishonest registration changes. We have even seen thousands of individual voters' choices reduced to coin flips.
This is undemocratic. This is outrageous. And this is flatly not acceptable. We must take back our voting rights!
I believe we need to basically start over from the ground up. Election Day as a national holiday. Primary and Special Election Days as state holidays. Automatic registration once you hit the legal voting age. Same day registration whenever needed. Banning of political parties in elections and elimination of recount challenge windows. Publicly financed campaigns and restoration of the fairness doctrine. Standardized ballot layouts with manual, transparent counting. Instant run-off across the country, and a requirement that elected officials carry at least 50% of the popular vote.
I do not believe that any real substantive change is going to happen, at this point, until We The People rise up and enforce change. The people who look poised to win the major party nominations this year make Ronald Reagan look like FDR, and the 1% that own our electoral system now have zero incentive to allow anyone better.
I have never organized something like this before, but I am willing to do what it takes to make it happen. Is anyone else with me??

(8,879 posts)elections, none of this matters. Without fixing the system we might as well not even have elections.

(11,785 posts)And I hope he'll be talking about campaign finance reform and election reform. There's too much voter suppression going on, and IMO, there's election fraud, too. At the least, there's no justifiable confidence in the way elections are conducted in most places.
One thing I noticed today was an exit poll (from PA, I think) asking voters what their number one concern was. Something like 47% said jobs, and 28% said income inequality. Does anyone think so many people would have had that down as their primary issue if it weren't for Bernie?

Kinda like Florida 2000 never happened.
Kinda like Ohio 2004 never happened.
Kinda makes one wonder.
As I said below if Clinton wins there will be no reform. She doesn't benefit from it so why the hell would she really support it. All she is doing is paying lip service to it. Every time her lips move she lies.

(22,000 posts)in terms of campaign finance reform. She'll start raising money from day 1 for her reelection campaign. This time she'll have three and a half years to raise funds from the White House. I'm sure the Lincoln Bedroom will come in handy for big donor sleepovers.
