Bernie Sanders

Yeah, Hillary can beat Bernie in closed primaries but that is only a small sample.
Where Bernie beats her is when independents (non affiliated) are allowed in open primaries. He would do better in a general election against repubs than her I think for this reason.
This is where the party is making a huge mistake I think.
Your thoughts?

(13,685 posts)It was exclusive, this primary. It was rigged to get H nominated and it may happen.
27 debates in 2008 gave Obama a chance. The party was not about to allow that this time. I may quit the party in protest. They don't like me or Bernie folks. Heck, they hate us. Fuck 'em.

(1,511 posts)The only factor that seems true with Bernie is that in sates that had higher turn out than 2008 he won 100% of the time. The lower the turn out the better she did. You could argue that adding rules to keep out voters and long lines hurt him, but I think many people did not care. We talk that people should know the candidates by now, but as activists we are in a bubble. I think in areas where his message got out, and there was not some sort of corruption in the system he did good. It could also have to be with many of the earlier open ones were too early for him and all at once, so now the closed ones like NY helped as a firewall for her. It is hard tro say, but higher turn out he always wins.

(1,890 posts)If you can't attract Independents then you are a weak General Election candidate. Everyone said this prior to 2016. The only reason it's not mentioned now is because Hillary can't attract Independents. They're hoping that Independents will hold their nose and vote for her but I don't think that's going to happen. Not this time.

Bernie has inconvenienced the mainstream's plan. They can't wait to be done with him. But they focus too much on the persona hence their fawning over HRC. They have to realize by now this isn't about Bernie per se?
It doesn't matter anymore about a personality. What has happened is that at least half of the Democratic Party has stood up and said we are sick of the status quo. We've been met by ridicule.
We'll see in November.

(1,890 posts)I think you are correct.
I live in Texas so my view may be skewed a bit, but the only political bumper stickers I see down here are the "Hillary for Prison" ones. Seriously, the right will band together and raise from the dead to vote against her. She wasn't a good candidate in 2008, and is not a good candidate now. Sanders/O'Malley, Sanders/Warren ... we have possibilities that can knock this out of the park. Although Bill Clinton is loved in certain party circles and has carried her through, her negatives are too high for the general.
