"...the Pope and Bernie have a lot in common. They’re both older guys who younger people love to take selfies with. Pope Francis is the first Jesuit Pope, while Bernie would be the first Jewish president. Also, they both really do seem to inspire young people and care about wealth inequality and warn against the ills of trickle down economics.

Bernie said, “People think Bernie Sanders is radical. Read what the pope is writing.”

He’s referring to last year’s encyclical Laudito Si, which is indeed a radical document that calls into question our relationships to consumerism and the environment, and sent cafeteria Catholics everywhere to clutching their pearls about how ignorant the Pope is. (BTW the term “cafeteria” Catholic is usually used as a cudgel by conservative Catholics against other Catholics who use birth control or whatever, but believe me, we’re all skipping things at the buffet).
