My thought is that her camp thought that it would put him in the position of having to defend himself and rattle off why he was qualified - which would just look whiny and bad. "No, I'm really qualified because..." The thought is that if you get someone denying something, they're still getting associated with it. That they did it softly shows both that it was meant as a trap and that they didn't really have much to say that would prove their point.

But then Bernie turned it around back on her by saying she wasn't qualified and listed actual reasons.

Her camp has to be reeling right now. I'm sure David Brock is pulling his hair out.

The same thing was going on with the debates until the last one. Starting in Jan she'd come out and just boldly lie about his votes, his positions, etc.. and he was too nice so she got away with such tactics - until the last debate when he had enough and hit back hard.

If I may insert a poker maxim here...

Betters and raisers tend to have more success than checkers and callers.

What Bernie did here was raise instead of calling.
