Enough of Bernie's pledged delegates abstain on the first ballot so that HRC does not achieve the number needed for the nomination.

After that, the pledges are released.

But if they abstain, then their votes aren't counted in the round they abstained and Bernie has even fewer votes for that round. I'm confused at how that would affect Hillary's count.
