Written as Clinton and Sanders take the stage for the Democratic debate on 3/6:
OK, you're a candidate who is noteworthy for lining one's pockets with speech money to the tune of over $153 million, and you show up for a debate wearing an outfit whose overwhelming statement is big pockets?
These pockets are yuuuuuuuuuuuuuge. I have never seen such giant pockets anywhere!
For those who didn't see, please stay tuned so you can see this most curious costume. At the hip level, two very large pockets are outlined in white against a blue suit. When I say "large," I mean at least 8" across and possibly 10" deep.
Is someone playing a trick on her? Maybe her wardrobe adviser is a Bernie supporter?

(1,573 posts)...but Hillary's choice of clothing should not ever be a matter for discussion or ridicule. We don't do that with male candidates; we shouldn't do that with female ones either.
(Oh, and for the record, I don't like Chris Christie fat jokes either.)

(35,713 posts)The communication message comes mostly from nonverbal communication. Some experts think it is as high as 65 per cent of the message. So when a major figure accused of lining her pockets comes out wearing a costume that emphasizes pockets, it is noteworthy. It says something.
I'm not a person who ridicules. You can do a search of my posts on this forum to prove that to yourself. Au contraire, most of my posts make positive comments.
It so happens that I'm an educator in the field of interpersonal communication. I have over 30 years of experience in this field. I teach this topic in higher education. I am highly qualified to bring this topic up, and I think it says more about you than it says about me that you interpreted it in such a fashion.

(1,573 posts)...and I truly do apologize for that little bit of snark. But if I, a 50+ year old woman finds that a bit offensive (and I'm not one to take offense easily), I'm probably not the only one. Your sheepskin notwithstanding.

(14,628 posts)and I find the OP offensive as well. It's disgusting to find this shit on DU.

(9,522 posts)As a psychology major, who worked in the field of job placement for disabled individuals, and later as a trainer who traveled all over the US, we often discussed what to wear and the importance of those kind of impressions. It is not superficial, as in fat jokes or the color of someone's hair or eyes.
FWIW, i have a good friend whose husband is a Wal-Mart VP in Arkansas. (I know, I know. She's still my friend.) She said when Bill was governor and they would come to Wal-Mart events back in the day, and Hillary would be dressed sloppily and have scuffed shoes, etc. My point being, I think she probably has someone who advises her on what to wear, and has had for a long time. She certainly has always looked nice since they hit the national scene.
As for the pockets, psychologist that I am, I don't rule out a Freudian slip on someone's part. I think this is an amusing topic.
I don't like her as a candidate but that has nothing to do with her wardrobe, which I think is very stylish, by the way. This OP actually made her more likable to me because I don't like it when people make fun of appearance. I say that as a pretty average looking fellow with zero sense of how to make myself look stylish.
There are plenty of other reasons not to vote for her but her appearance should have nothing to do with it. I mean come on, my guy, Bernie? He only recently started combing his hair.

(15,090 posts)Men have a standard power outfit--dark suit, white shirt, blue or red tie. There is no real equivalent for women, leaving us to struggle with fashion vagaries.

(18,791 posts)I was working and cannot stand her voice anyway but think your point is hilarious.
I've seen some of those outfits lately and keep thinking, is that a "bonded knit" fabric from the 1960's/1970's?

(21,675 posts)Never thought of the pockets that way, but it makes sense. I don't understand the hissy fits about your opinion; it's as valid as anyone else's.
I'm a visual person, and thought her outfit was bizarre, like a dress over pants.
KoKo
(84,711 posts)and wearing that outfit with the "deep pockets" could have been an "in your face" kind of amusement to Sanders because she knew he would bring up Wall Street and so she just found it funny.
Anyone who loudly laughs at "We Came...We Saw..He Died" has got to have some off the wall quirky sense of humor. She's done some other things that she finds very funny in a bizarre way. Its just who she is.
NJCher
(35,713 posts)I don't know about "We Came...We Saw...He Died," but I think I still get your point, and if I do, you may have something:
This may not be the first time she's played with costuming. When I discussed this with my brother, he pointed this out to me:
Dr. Evil, from the goofy Austin Powers movies:
Hillary, pointing again (drives me nutz!):
So playing around with your theory, this could be a stress reliever for her. She is without a doubt the most attacked woman in history. Something about her really sets people off. Personally, I don't know how she deals with it, but she's figured out a way. Can you hear her thinking, "They think I'm so evil....wait, I have an idea!"
Now that I've read your idea, I'm mulling over the possibility that she does this as a way to have a little fun, and play--in her own way--with the critics.
People in the media, public figures, and software programmers do things like that. Here's an example: when I was working on my B.A., I was the newspaper editor for the university student paper. My staff and I were mostly stoned putting this thing together, so for one issue I got the idea we should have headlines that were all double entendres' for pot smoking. Stuff like "University Enrollments Reach New High." We had fun putting all the headlines together, and laughed ourselves silly when it came out and no one seemed to pick up on it. Of course, this made it all the more fun.
Software programmers do it with Easter eggs.
We may have a new sport: Hillary costume watching! Thanks, KoKo!

(84,711 posts)Had no idea about the Easter Eggs.....fun read, THX.
Hillary has joked about her hairstyle changes and her custom pant suits for years. Some of the Hillary supporters here on DU even have a sig line of her with all her pantsuit colors. So, Hillary has made her "style" an issue and probably enjoys the speculation that gives her more attention. When one lives in a protected and isolating Secret Service bubble as she has for so long ...maybe one way to deal with the sameness is to do some creative exploration with wardrobe. So..yes, I do have fun watching her wardrobe because she is a chameleon. Glad to have another watcher.

(17,651 posts)Btw, bad outfit choice. Very bad.
I've seen her wear much nicer suits.

(5,069 posts)Would love to see the pictures - fashion is anything but my strong suit for example....At the start of my career, I was in the military and it was a god send not to have to pick out professional apparel.
As a woman who has spent her > 30 year career in the government, I find too much is made playing the 'feminist card' about Hillary's problems about what to wear. It's the policies and not the apparel. I find making Hillary the martyr for being the first female candidate - etc. is also a crutch....She's been a professional for decades and some of the truisms about 'dress for success' imho still apply...Further she has the $$ resources to pay people to tell her what to wear and also to fund a wardrobe that can only be compared to divas and Hollywood celebrities. Her wardrobe is fair game.

(15,406 posts)I had not seen them when I first read your post.
I am going to take the "in your face" reason she wore that dark blue pantsuit with the yooooge white pockets. Yep, she knows that many people don't like that she's bought, but she doesn't give a shit. She's the queen, after all.
OR
Someone else picked the outfit out for her and did it to show her DEEP pockets.
Also, I don't get the "sexist" accusation.
