Sen. Sanders: I Want to Debate GOPers Before General Election, They ‘Get Away with Murder’

Senator Bernie Sanders is trying to push for debates between the Democratic and Republican presidential candidates now, because, he says, the GOP is “getting away with murder” and they need to be called out on that.

Sanders is pushing for more Democratic debates, as well as cross-party debates, which would be unheard of in the modern era of presidential campaigning. Rachel Maddow asked Sanders tonight why he would want to do that.

Sanders explained, “In a sense, the Republicans get away with murder. They have an absolutely reactionary agenda.”

He argued that a cross-party debate would be a great opportunity to cut out the “political gossip” and honestly confront each other on the issues.

The republicans are not going to debate a democratic candidate. Senator sanders needs to get the nomination then his request will happen.

I also believe it would play into the Media Continuous "Horse Race Desperate Need for Ratings" Campaign and would likely get attention from the networks. It is possible that a few issues might actually get aired in the process and be a good thing for the public that takes time to watch them should this ever occur.

I think the GOP clowns will turn the debate into a freak show, and Sanders will be dragged into the slime. Plus, with all the Rs, Sanders isn't going to get much facetime to get his points made. I really think this isn't a good idea.

It's one thing for the Republicans to brag about their ignorance regarding evolution and climate change when they're in a cocoon by themselves. I have a harder time imagining them doing it with some Democrats on the stage with them. It will make it more obvious just how delusional they are.

Also, the debates are more likely to draw some Republican viewers who may just discover that they like a lot of what Bernie has to say. You'd have a hard time convincing me that working class Republicans would be hostile to raising the minimum wage or making tuition to public colleges free. It's just the fat cats who don't want that stuff.

Maybe you could call the whole American presidential election season nothing more than a big puppet show run by the corporate puppet masters. It's all carefully scripted from behind the scenes to keep the American people divided and polarized amongst themselves, voting from their own doctrinaire cocoons. And heaven forbid if Democrats and Republicans should ever come together to support a candidate who's for everything that they are for - it could mean the end of the corporate oligarchy as we know it!

Assuming Hillary would not agree to be part of something like this, a debate between some number of Republicans and Bernie Sanders on the same stage would help Bernie in his campaign against Hillary. To the extent that Hillary is weakened, the R's may feel this could work to their advantage.

The elites obviously would hate that too, but
still a nice idea for a simultaneous "shot across the bow" at both GOPers and the Conventional Way
Washington works, which so many folks are deeply unhappy about.

Damn smart thing for Bernie to say, IMO.

sick and tired. Second, Bernie is a first class Rabblerouser and will attract the media. Third, Hillary will continue to "Listen" and her absence will make the news. Fourth, the Republicans still try to think of Bernie as a doddering old fool...much to their demise.

We need an organization that would sponsor it, like the League of Women Voters used to be or PBS. So what organization could carry this thing...that's what I'm wondering. I do believe it will happen. Because politicians being what they are, will never miss a chance to be on camera. And Republican's Fox bubble righteousness think they have all the answers. What's not to love about something new?
